Read my spoiler-free movie review of Monster – The Ed Gein Story (2025).

American murderer and suspected serial killer Ed Gein is the subject of Netflix’s latest story in their anthology series about high-profile crimes and killers.

Co-created by Ian Brennan and Ryan Murphy, Monster – The Ed Gein Story stars Charlie Hunnam, Tom Hollander and Olivia Williams.

Hello darkness!

I’m excited to see Hunnam’s impressive transformation because he’s a brilliant actor. But, since I’m still in my ‘not too dark, please’ era of film-loving, who knows if I’ll get round to watching this. Perhaps I’ll give it a go and see how far I can get. At the very least, I’ll watch all the trailers Netflix releases.

What are your thoughts on part 3 of Murphy and Brennan’s Monster series? So far, I’ve watched exactly zero, because both Monster – The Jeffrey Dahmer Story (2022) and MonstersThe Lyle and Erik Menendez Story (2024) proved too disturbing.

Laurie Metcalf, Suzanna Son, Vicky Krieps, Lesley Manville, Joey Pollari, Charlie Hall, Tyler Jacob Moore and Addison Rae also star.

Monster – The Ed Gein Story Release Dates: October 3rd, 2025 (US & UK)…

Happy Film Loving,

G

  1. I couldn’t bring myself to watch either of the first two installments, but am excited about Charlie Hunnam in the lead. I loved him in Pacific Rim and The Gentleman! So I could give this one a go; especially now that it’s spooky season😈👻

  2. It was difficult enough to see Hunnam as a villain in that netflix star wars like movie (forgot the name.) Just don’t want to see him like this, plus the ick factor. It’s the same reason I haven’t seen the other two.

  3. Looks interesting and definitely inspired by the look of Fincher’s 7even that defined this subgenre.
I’m not familiar with this killer but it seems like it inspired a bunch of classic movies since the 80s.

  4. Ed Gein. Pure evil. I really really want to watch these but am horribly triggered by animal abuse so, I haven’t dared tune in. As I recall, Silence of the Lambs was loosely based on Gein. The “it rubs the lotion on its skin” guy. Also there’s a series that ofc I can’t remember the title, but it’s about the first FBI unit for serial killers

    1. I’ve heard him described as pure evil by many, and I believe it.

The series is too dark for many of us. I’m looking forward to Hunnam confirming that he was able to shake off the darkness it took to play such a monster, in a reasonable amount of time, if not faster.
