POPSTAR – NEVER STOP NEVER STOPPING (2016): New Comedy Trailer From Andy Samberg & Imogen Poots

Popstar – Never Stop Never Stopping is a brand new comedy coming this summer and it stars  Andy Samberg as popstar Conner4Real…

Trailer 1

Trailer 2

The story follows the superstar after very disappointing album sales. Very much a perfect place for the comedy to start, if you ask me.

I’m really hoping that this movie will be better than 7 Days In Hell (2015) – which for me, turned out to be much funnier in trailer form.

With cameos from music industry personalities and artists including Simon Cowell, Carrie Underwood and Usher, my fingers are tightly crossed.

Maybe Conner4Real can be the Derek Zoolander (2001) of the music industry. Though, perhaps sans the ‘mental challenges’ that plague the stereotypical male model; or not. It doesn’t really matter as long as it’s funny.

Popstar – Never Stop Never Stopping Release Dates: June 3rd, 2016 (US & CAN); August 26th, 2016 (UK) …

SECRET IN THEIR EYES (2015): The Things I Liked…

Secret In Their Eyes (2015), Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Chiwetel Ejiofor
Secret In Their Eyes (2015), Julia Roberts, Nicole Kidman, Chiwetel Ejiofor

Directed by Billy Ray; Nicole Kidman, Julia Roberts, Chiwetel Ejiofor and Alfred Molina are the stars of Secret In Their Eyes. A story about a group of FBI Investigators; a close-knit team for whom everything changes when they learn the identity of the victim of their new murder case.

Ray’s movie follows the events and decisions that end up leading to a surprising, yet understandable conclusion, the revelation of which is a key highlight.

Seeing evidence of the depth of the friendships between the main protagonists – before, during and after the central crime, that is the thing I enjoyed most about Secret In Their Eyes . One more great moment would have been when the audience learns of  the victim’s identity. But…! that little nugget was unfortunately given away for free in the film’s trailer. What is one to do…?

Secret In Their Eyes could have been a better movie . The cast performed well but I think they were let down by post production, namely what felt like an awkward overuse of flashback and the trailer edit.

WINTER’S BONE (2010): The Things I liked…

Winter's Bone (2010), Jennifer Lawrence
Winter’s Bone (2010), Jennifer Lawrence

Winter’s Bone is a movie I was drawn to because it’s known as the one that put Jennifer Lawrence on the map and for good reason. Her performance is perfectly measured and very convincing.

I particularly appreciate her character, Ree’s strength and her commitment to her family’s well being given her father’s recent and unexplained absence.

With the movie’s Ozark Mountain setting in mind, I can I understand the likely reasoning for its semi-leisurely pace. Nevertheless, I did find myself wanting things to move a little faster – and for the camerawork to be less shaky in parts.

Overall, I wouldn’t say that I regret watching Winter’s Bone because the story and the performances were good. I just wouldn’t insist that anyone else should absolutely see it… unless something about it, like the fact that it’s the film that put Jennifer Lawrence on the map really, really calls to you. Another reason that may call to someone  is Tom Hawkes in his role as Ree’s uncle, Teardrop, a great performance and definite highlight.

Based on the book by Daniel Woodrell, Winter’s Bone is directed by Debra Granik. Garrett Dillahunt, Shelley Waggeer and Lauren Sweetser make up of some of the key supporting cast.

THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE (2016): An Easter Message From the Hatchlings

The Angry Birds Movie (2016), Cute Hatchling
The Angry Birds Movie (2016), Cute Hatchling

I know the story of The Angry Birds Movie is generally about Red, the one with the eyebrows, but I’m obsessed with the cuteness of the baby birds, a.k.a the Hatchlings…

May these adorable little cuties feature as prominently as possible in the movie. They may not be on the same level of cuteness as the Minions, but the sight of them is seriously smile inducing.

The Angry Birds Movie is out on:  May 13th, 2016 (UK), May 20th, (US)…

THE TRUST (2016): New Trailer From Elijah Wood & Nicolas Cage

The Trust (2016), Elijah Wood, Nicolas Cage.

Today’s crime thriller, starring Elijah Wood and Nicolas Cage looks promising…

I’m still holding onto the dream of seeing Cage in films I loved as much as I did Face/ Off (1997). Fingers, toes and everything crossed.

The Trust Release Dates: May 27th, 2016 (UK)…

ROOM (2015): For The Power Of Love & Imagination

Room (2015), Jacob Tremlay, Brie Larson
Room (2015), Jacob Tremlay, Brie Larson

Based on the novel by Emma Donoghue, the story of Room is one of the love between a mother and her child. Particularly, in this instance, all that such a love can come to mean, given the enclosed surroundings that the two are forced to call home.

The scenes that stick with me after watching Room are the ones that involve an incredible amount of tension and suspense and the very powerful / moving moments sans dialogue.

Directed by Lenny Abrahamson, the reasons I had to watch Room include the extraordinary story, the film’s trailer, and the promise of Brie Larson and Jacob Tremblay’s  performances.

The mother / son dynamic is the key focus of Room and understandably so. However, I still found myself wanting to know more about Sean Bridger’s ‘Big Nick’ character and how it is that he came to be. Something tells me that the ‘Big Nick’ movie exists, it just may not be based on a book by Emma Donoghue.

Watch Room for the performances, camera work, general execution and all that the story  has to say about love and imagination.

Speaking of imagination, there’s one specific movie that popped into my mind as I watched Room and it’s Roberto Benigni’s Oscar Winning, Life Is Beautiful (1997), a movie I highly recommend.

KILL COMMAND (2016): New Trailer Starring Vanessa Kirby & David Ajala

Kill Command (2016), Vanessa Kirby
Kill Command (2016), Vanessa Kirby

A promising action/ sci-fi/ horror movie is coming. Kill Command is written and directed by steven Gomez and Vanessa Kirby, David Ajala plus Thure Lindhardt. It’s a scary man against machine story set in the near future…

After I recognising David Ajala, an actor who was great in Starred Up – one of the best  films of 2013, I feel more hopeful. The general idea of machines taking over has always been interesting. All I’m hoping for now is that this movie is remembered for far more than just the word ‘Identify.’

Kill Command Release Dates: May 13th, 2016 (UK)…

NINA (2016): New Trailer From Zoe Saldana & David Oyelowo

Nina (2016), Zoe Saldana
Nina (2016), Zoe Saldana

Today’s trailer is one that I wish I could get more excited about, but there remains one specific thing that just won’t let me…

The thing I’m referring to is the quality of the prosthetics on Zoe Saldana’s face. I simply refuse to believe that Nina Simone’s cheeks were ever that motionless as she spoke.

There are of course, other issues fans of Simone’s music have expressed about this movie. For example, the idea that someone like Viola Davis might have been a better option – for reasons beyond resemblance and Davis’ notable talents and range. I can’t say I disagree with the idea of Viola in this role. The woman is gifted. For me personally, the entire movie is more likely to be a complete waste of time if it isn’t possible to suspend my disbelief because the prosthetics don’t look good.

I guess I’m going to have to find a good Nina Simone documentary. For now though, it’s time to remind myself of why she’s very important to so many and listen to her wonderful voice and music.

Nina Release Dates: April 22nd, 2016 (US)…
