THE DARK KNIGHT (2008): Superior Film Making & What Heath Ledger Did

Written and directed by the Nolan brothers, (Jonathan and Christopher) The Dark Knight is the second movie in a notable three part series that started with Batman Begins (2005).

Christian Bale is back as Batman and time he must face off with Gotham’s current, havoc wreaking menace, the Joker.

Like all films by the Nolan brothers, The Dark Knight is no exception to the rule of story telling excellence, engaging dialogue, action sequence prowess, a brilliant musical score and truly memorable performances.

As good as Bale is in the role of Batman – and he is very good, the most memorable performance in The Dark Knight is delivered by the unfortunately late but unforgettable Australian actor, Heath Ledger.

Whether he had passed as he did before the film’s release or not, it’s near enough impossible to think of and mention The Dark Knight without also highlighting what Ledger accomplished with this one role. His portrayal of the Joker is simply one of the most mesmerising things I’ve ever seen on screen. So much so that each time the camera wasn’t on him, it felt like the movie was moving noticeably slower.

The entire film is quite the achievement, thanks to a superior filmmaking team that includes, along with the leading cast, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Aaron Eckhart, Gary Oldman, Michael Caine, Morgan Freeman and ‘super composer’, Hans Zimmer.

Most film lovers have already seen The Dark Knight. But to all who haven’t, get ready for a great opening and closing sequence, as well as n memorable  everything in between.

One of the best moments in the opening sequence has to be the surprise of what  William Fichtner’s badass Bank Manager character does when he gets on his feet. If you’ve seen it, you understand.

Happy Film Loving 🙂

Goosebumps (2015) Odeya Rush, Jack Black, Ryan Lee, Dylan Minnette

R.L. Stine is the real life award winning author of hugely successful young adult horror stories. Goosebumps is one of his series and the second trailer for the film adaption just arrived.

Directed by Rob Letterman, Goosebumps features Jack Black as R.L. Stine.  Dylan Minnette, Odeya Rush, Ryan Lee and Halston Sage also star in this  action/ adventure / comedy that will be arriving just in time for Halloween.

The trailer editors appear to have tried to match the original goosebumps font towards the end of the trailer. Though I’m not sure why they didn’t at 1:03 minutes.

I used to love the books so I really hope the movie is worthy.

EDEN (2014): New Trailer Starring Nate Parker, Diego Boneta & Guaranteed Savagery

Eden (2014), )Mario Casas, Nate Parker
Eden (2014), )Mario Casas, Nate Parker

There’s a modern interpretation of Lord Of The Flies, William Golding’s classic novel of survival and savagery. This time it’s directed by Shyam Madiraju and features a cast that includes Nate Parker, Jessica Lowndes, Diego Boneta, James Remar and Rob Mayes…

Even though I’m definitely scared to think about a situation where cannibalism is a seemingly legitimate option in order to survive, I have to see Eden because the trailer has convinced me. That said, I probably won’t be doing that a few days before having to get on a plane.

Out September 2015.

Happy Eden 🙂

Love The Coopers (2015), Ed Helms, Olivia Wilde, Amanda Seyfried,

Summer isn’t over yet but if you didn’t already know, it’s time for the Christmas movie trailer. Love The Coopers is the first one I’ve  seen for 2015…

Does it look refreshing different? No but it does look like the Jessie Nelson directed seasonal film will provide precisely the mildly amusing yet heartwarming entertainment one can enjoy after stuffing ones face on the lord’s special day.

The cast list includes familiar names like Olivia Wilde, Diane Keaton, John Goodman, Amanda Seyfried, Marisa Tomei and Anthony Mackie.

Out November 2015 (U.S.) and December 2015 (U.K.)

Happy Love The Coopers 🙂

YOUTH (2015) New Trailer From Michael Caine, Paul Dano & Jane Fonda

Youth (2015), Michael Caine, Paul Dano
Youth (2015), Michael Caine, Paul Dano

I saw the trailer for Youth a few months ago and thought it was a comedy. Not so much now, after this new version…

Directed by Paolo Sorrentino, it does look good, especially with a cast list that includes Jane Fonda, Harvey Keitel, Paul Dano, Michael Caine, Rachel Weisz and Alex Macqueen.

May this non-comedy not depress me. But if it must, I sure hope it’s worth it.

Happy Youth 🙂

ASHBY (2015): New Comedy, Promising Trailer

Ashby (2015), Mickey Rourke, Nat Wolffe
Ashby (2015), Mickey Rourke, Nat Wolffe

A good looking comedy starring Emma Roberts and Nat Wolffe is coming…

What I like most is the idea of Mickey Rourke in a comedy role. Sarah Silverman’s involvement is also  a plus but the thing I wish wasn’t the case is the length of the of this trailer in relation to how much of the plot it reveals.

Happy Ashby 🙂

ALIVE INSIDE (2014): Excellent Documentary About Music & Dementia

Alive Inside (2014), Henry

Inspired by Dan Cohen, founder of the nonprofit organization Music & Memory, Alive Inside presents brilliant insight into the broken American healthcare system. Specifically the nursing home and the extraordinary effect music has in restoring memory loss and a deep sense of self in dementia sufferers.

This is one of the best documentaries I’ve seen recently and it was impossible not to be moved by it.

Directed by Michael Rossato-Bennett, Alive Inside is the winner of the Audience Award at the 2014 Sundance Film Festival. Watch it and feel empowered.

Happy Alive Inside 🙂
