M3GAN (2023): New Trailer From Allison Williams, Ronny Chieng, Jenna Davis, Amie Donald…

The latest from Allison Williams, Ronny Chieng, Jenna Davis and Amie Donald is a creepy horror/sci-fi/thriller.

A Gerard Johnstone-directed story about a robotics engineer who builds a life-like doll named M3gan that begins to have ideas outside the brief.

I’m interested because this is a horror/sci-fi/thriller, rather than a straight horror film. I also definitely want to see how well the creepy factor translates. So far, both the presence and the idea of M3gan make me uneasy. However, nothing in this trailer is quite s creepy as the thing at 2:03

I’m also a little concerned about how well I’ll be able to suspend my disbelief. I probably liked the premise more before it leaned more strongly into being a horror film. Surely M3gan would still be intriguing without what seems like gratuitous horror theatrics. for theatrics sake.

Lastly, why is M3gan is having to run on all fours at 1:40? It seems strange, no?

How curious are you about M3gan?

Violet McGraw, Brian Jordan Alvarez, Arlo Green, Jen Van Epps, Kira Josephson and Stephane Garneau-Monten also star.

M3gan Release Dates: January 6th, 2023 (US), January 13th (UK)…

THE PERFECTION (2019): The Thing I Liked…

The Perfection (2019), Allison Williams
The Perfection (2019), Allison Williams

Starring Allison Williams, Logan Browning and Steven Weber, The Perfection is a ‘darker than you expect’ drama / horror / thriller. Directed by Richard Shepard, the story follows a musical prodigy who sets upon a sinister path that begins with her seeking out the current star pupil of her former school.

I kind of already knew based on the trailer that Shepard’s movie wouldn’t be the most comfortable of viewings. I just didn’t know that within ten minutes into the film, a thought that crossed my mind would be ‘Am I ready for this darkness?

The darkness that made me uneasy wasn’t anything to do with physical violence, though there is some of that here. It was about the negative energy / vibe that seemed so easy for the audience to see, yet the person the ill-intent was aimed toward appeared completely oblivious.

As far from comfortable as this movie made me feel for a number of reasons, I also found it quite engaging – even though something about its execution felt a tad rough around the edges. Another way to say it would be… ‘The Perfection is not like Green Book (2018)’. By this I mean, in The Perfection, every single scene didn’t flow perfectly without me having to pause and question any of the story, dialogue or general happenings. Additionally, the acting was OK but I did not get completely lost in the world of the story.

I say give Shepard’s movie a chance because it’s not quite what you think it’s going to be. You’ll definitely go on a ride that won’t be the most comfortable but everything kind of pays off in the most unexpected way.

There are also  one or two – perhaps more moments of stunning imagery. My favourite of which is at the top of this very post.

THE PERFECTION (2018): New Trailer From Allison Williams, Logan Browning, Alaina Huffman, Steven Weber…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The Perfection (2019).

A sinister path with shocking consequences is what happens after a troubled musical prodigy seeks out the star pupil of her former school.

Directed by Richard Shepard; Allison Williams, Logan Browning Alaina Huffman and Steven Weber are the star of Netflix’s latest horror / thriller…

I think I’m ready for this dark tale of envy, yet the creepiness looks quite intense. In other words, I can already see myself sliding away into my t-shirt like a tortoise retreating into its shell. Especially when that poor musicians body starts getting messed with.

Evelyn Chew, Glynis Davies, Winnie Hung, Graeme Duffy, Christina Jastrzembska, Stephen Chang and Milah Thompson also star.

The Perfection Release Dates: May 24th, 2019 (US & UK)…

GET OUT (2017): A Scary, Suspenseful & Clever Mystery…

Get Out (2017), Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams
Get Out (2017), Daniel Kaluuya, Allison Williams

Meeting a girlfriend’s parents for the first time is scary for any young man but when you’re a young African-American man (Daniel Kaluuya) visiting his Caucasian girlfriend’s mysterious family estate for the first time, there’s another level of scary that comes into play. And it’s writer / director Jordan Peele’s exploration of this fear combined with his smart social and cultural observations that make Get Out a thing to see.

As a self-confessed wuss, especially where scary movies are concerned, as soon as Get Out started, I was more than ready for the film to end. Not because I was having a bad time, as such. I simply knew that something bad was going to happen and I was looking forward to the point when it was over.

In spite of my ‘wussy’ ways, I did make it to the very end of Get Out, a well constructed mystery where the immediate scares come in the suspenseful moments when you don’t quite know how the impending horror is going to take shape.

Watch this movie because it’s worthy and you probably won’t have nightmares afterwards. At least not on the night you watch the movie. I didn’t; though I did have plenty of other thoughts going on… so that’s probably why. Or, maybe tonight is when the scares will come. Tonight…
