Chris Pratt, Sam Richardson, Betty Gilpin and Yvonne Strahovski are the stars of The Lego Movie (2014) director, Chris McKay’s new action/adventure/sci-fi, The Tomorrow War.

The promising trailer has Pratt as Dan, a family man tasked with annihilating a future threat to humanity’s very existence.

I’m in for the Pratt brand of charm and action. Also, Gilpin appears to be in the wife/mother role for this one. But I’d be lying if I didn’t say that I’m hoping she gets to kick some alien behind. Especially since she was so great in The Hunt (2020).

J.K. Simmons, Seychelle Gabriel, Alan Trong, Jasmine Mathews, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Keith Powers, Mike Mitchell, Chibuikem Uche and Felisha Terrell also star.

New action/adventure/sci-fi The Tomorrow War has Chris Pratt playing Dan, a man drafted to fight in a future war. One where the fate of humanity relies on his ability to confront his past.

Directed by Chris McKay; additional key cast includes Betty Gilpin, J.K. Simmons, Sam Richardson, Edwin Hodge and Yvonne Strahovski.

Hello, interesting movie premise!

I’m also in to see Pratt in an action movie role; the kind that seems to have strong Tom Cruise vibes. Perhaps it’s just the shot at 16 seconds into this trailer that has me making the Cruise connection.

Also, there’s Gilpin. I feel as though her character is going to be quite the badass. If you’ve seen The Hunt (2020), then you know that she’s great at that.

Jasmine Mathews, Mary Lynn Rajskub, Ryan Kiera Armstrong, Keith Powers, Mike Mitchell, Seychelle Gabriel, Alan Trong, Chibuikem Uche and Felisha Terrell also star.

ONWARD (2020): The Things I Liked…

Onward (2019), Disney Pixar
Onward (2019), Disney Pixar

Onward is a movie with a beautiful big brother / little brother relationship at its heart. And this relationship is my favourite thing about the latest Disney Pixar animated adventure starring Chris pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer.

Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers set off on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there. A quest that neither could do without the other.

In terms of how much I enjoyed the story, I think Onward is OK. I wanted to have been more engrossed with it all but there wasn’t enough newness to it, theme wise. There wasn’t necessarily much animated cuteness either butI l doubt I’d have noticed that if I’d loved the way the story played from beginning to end. It’s really the last third of director Dan Scanlon’s film that I enjoyed most. Before then, I was more than a little impatient for the results of the film’s central magic spell to manifest.

Other things I enjoyed about Onward include the fullness of Holland’s character Ian’s blue hair and what Scanlon’s film has to say about belief in general – but especially self belief and confidence.

As far as animated movies about sibling relationships go, particularly the big brother / little brother dynamic, my favourite will probably always be Big Hero 6 (2014).

Watch Onward because it’s not bad and perhaps you’ll find even more to love than I did.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Onward (2020).

From writer / director Dan Scanlon, Onward is a new Disney Pixar animated adventure starring Chris Pratt, Tom Holland, Octavia Spencer, and Julia Louis-Dreyfus.

Set in a suburban fantasy world, Onward is about two teenage elf brothers who embark on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there…

The two moons at 01:33 into this trailer have me intrigued; the same with the idea of usually majestic unicorns as ‘vermin.’

I can’t wait to see how this story about a world of imaginary creatures such as pixies, mermaids, gnomes, unicorns and pet dragons actually unfolds.

To those who’ve already read my thoughts on Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014), you’ll know that I didn’t completely love the movie. Regardless of that truth though, I’m still determined to see as many of the stand alone films of each Avengers Endgame (2019) character as possible. And with that goal in mind, a few days ago I sat myself down to two hours and sixteen minutes of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2.

My expectations weren’t exactly the highest, as one might imagine. So picture my surprise when I found myself having a good time almost immediately.

In trying to understand what had changed, it became clear that , the story is simply much better this time round. I found it more interesting. I definitely enjoyed the surprises within the script as well as the elaboration on the backstory of several of the main characters. I’m also quite sure that there weren’t any sentimental moments or attempts at humour that felt hugely forced. I imagine that everything was that little bit better because the actors were more comfortable in their roles.

I still stand by the truth that I didn’t enjoy Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014), but I’m also sure that my appreciation of Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol. 2. isn’t a result of me learning to ignore any of the humour that doesn’t quite land or ignore any general corniness within the script. I really did like the new characters, find the story more fun, and appreciated the special effects that little bit extra.

With all that said I now say, watch it because it’s good and especially if you’re sure I’m not completely mad.

GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY (2014): The Things I Liked…

Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014), Chris Pratt
Guardians Of The Galaxy (2014), Chris Pratt

Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel are among the stars of Guardians Of The Galaxy. A James Gunn directed action / adventure / comedy about a group of intergalactic criminals and their attempt to stop a fanatical warrior with plans to purge the universe.

The main reason I wanted to see this film is because I’d really like to watch the last two Avengers movies but I’m behind. And I’ve never been one to jump to watch a sequel before seeing the films that came before.

I’m quite sure that the following opinion isn’t popular but as Gunn’s movie played, it wasn’t too long before the thought ‘I don’t think I like this.’ came to mind. As I wondered why, several reasons began to surface. Reason one, it feels quite a lot like Star Trek. I’m not saying that I hate Star Trek, but I’m also not overly enthused by it either. Reason two, some of the humorous moments work but there’s a bunch of others that feel as though the script is trying too hard to be amusing. So much so that several attempts to make the audience laugh came across to me as forced. Thirdly, I found that out of the four or five main sentimental moments, I only really appreciated two of them; the one on earth and the one involving Groot. The rest just felt rather corny, for want of a better phrase.

As for the things that stood out most in a positive way, those include Zoe Saldana’s physical performance, Karen Gillian as the less favoured sibling, and of course, the visual effects that show what space actually looks like.

Knowing Guardians Of The Galaxy as a movie that many people love, I mostly see it as a reminder that fantasy is definitely not my favourite genre. Especially when most of the actors are sporting plenty of make up / prosthetics. Nevertheless, to everyone who had a great time, I’m seriously very pleased for you.

THE KID (2019): New Trailer From Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio, Dane DeHaan…

The Kid (2019), Ethan Hawke, Lionsgate Movies

Ethan Hawke, Chris Pratt, Vincent D’Onofrio and Dane DeHaan are the stars of The Kid.

Directed by D’Onofrio, The Kid is a biography / western about a young boy forced to go on the run whilst trying to save his sister from his villainous uncle. On his journey he finds himself increasingly entwined in the lives of Sheriff Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid…

I’m not overly familiar with the Sheriff Pat Garrett and Billy The Kid story but I am aware of that Billy is an outlaw and I’m interested mainly because of Hawke and Pratt. My fingers crossed for a pleasant surprise.

Leila George, Adam Baldwin, Jenny Gabrielle and Tait Fletcher also star.

The Kid Release Dates: March 8th, 2019 (2019)…

The Lego Movie 2 – The Second Part (2019)

I decided that I already like this movie simply because of the title – especially ‘the second part’ of it. Looking forward to all the humour and silliness.
