Dakota Johnson, Jason Segel and Casey Affleck’s latest drama is Our Friend. A story about the support a couple gets from their best friend after they receive life-altering news.

Directed by Gabriela Cowperthwaite; Additional key cast includes Gwendoline Christie, Cherry Jones and Marielle Scott.

I find myself surprised by this mix of actors is. It’s perhaps most surprising because of Segel, an actor I always picture first in comedy films (Forgetting Sarah Marshall (2008), I Love You, Man (2009) and This is 40 2012), rather than dramas.

I’m in forJohnson’s performance and to see how this friendship triangle story is navigated. I say ‘triangle’ but there’s also the forth element; Segel’s character’s girlfriend who’s waiting for him to return.

Ahna O’Reilly, Violet McGraw, Reed Diamond, Azita Ghanizada, Michael Papajohn, Ritchie Montgomery, Isabella Kai, Chandler Head and Jennifer Pierce Mathus.

As you may have heard and read by now, the latest film from Robert Redford, Jason Segel and Rooney Mara, The Discovery has a rather memorable first five minutes – and it’s true.

Written and directed by Justin Lader and Charlie McDowell respectively; the team who brought us the rather good ‘The One I Love (2014); The Discovery is a drama / mystery set two years after it’s scientifically proven that there is indeed an afterlife. 

In addition to the opening scene, I did enjoy some of the discussion about what happens in the afterlife – particularly the exploration of whether it’s actually real. There are also one or two more unexpected things that take place later on in the movie that had me surprised, in a good way. Nevertheless, I feel as though had it not been for the good opening scene, there would be much less to say about The Discovery. Reason being most of the film is more ‘OK-ish’ than great. Sure, tune in for the first five minutes and if you’re curious enough, continue on.

Directed and co-written by Charlie McDowell, the concept is simply too interesting not to tune in and I’m sure it’s safe to say that all is not as it seems.
