Judas and the Black Messiah tells the story of Fred Hampton, Chairman of the Illinois Black Panther Party, and his fateful betrayal by FBI informant William O’Neal.

Co directed by Ryan Coogler and Shaka King this very promising movie stars Daniel Kaluuya, LaKeith Stanfield and Jesse Plemons.

It’s official, this is my favourite week of movie trailer releases in 2020. First we had Ratched (2020) a couple of days ago and now this. I’ve already watched this trailer countless times and I cannot wait to see what looks like a superb performance from Kaluuya and Stanfield. Two brilliant actors I last saw together in Jordan Peele’s massive hit, Get Out (2017).

This is the kind of movie that I imagine will be really great to see in a movie theatre.

Martin Sheen, Ashton Sanders, Lil Rel Howery, Algee Smith, Jermaine Fowler, Robert Longstreet, Dominique Fishback, Nick Fink and Darrell Britt-Gibson also star.

Judas and The Black Messiah Release Dates: February 12th, 2021, (US); February 26th, 2021 (UK)…

Knives Out is a new drama / mystery starring Daniel Craig, Chris Evans, Ana De Armes, LaKeith Stanfield and Jamie Lee Curtis.

Directed by Rian Jones of Star Wars – The Last Jedi (2017), the a detective (Craig) investigates the death of the patriarch of an eccentric, combative family…

The interesting cast list is the reason I want to see this. My fingers are crossed. Especially since in Adam Sandler and Jennifer Aniston’s recent Murder Mystery (2019) movie, it was the ‘murder mystery’ portion of the film that I found least engaging.

Christopher Plummer, Michael Shannon, Don Johnson, Toni Collette, Katherine Langford, Riki Lindhome and Raúl Castillo also star.Christopher Plummer,

SOMEONE GREAT (2019): The Things I Liked…

Someone Great (2019), Gina Rodriguez
Someone Great (2019), Gina Rodriguez

Someone Great stars Gina Rodriguez as Jenny, a young woman who just went through a devastating break-up. She becomes determined to enjoy one last night in New York City with her friends, before moving to San Francisco for work.

After you watched the trailer for this movie, just in case – like myself you were thinking that half the film would be set in New York City and the other half in San Francisco, you better forget about it. Someone Great happens entirely in New York and there are zero gorgeous images of the Golden Gate Bridge to be enjoyed here, sorry.

Now that I’ve delivered the bit of news that probably only I care about, I enjoyed writer / director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson’s film more than I thought I would. In fact, I’ll even go as far as to say that this is my favourite of Rodriguez’s roles. She did a good job of selling the romantic connection, the devastation that followed when it all fell apart, as well as the bond between Jenny and her best friends, played by DeWanda Wise and Brittany Snow.

Nicely edited and paced, Someone Great captures well, though semi-briefly the highs and lows of a passionate relationship in one’s twenties. I also enjoyed the sisterly, non-toxic female friendships plus the music and dancing. The talented LaKeith Stanfield’s performance as the love interest and Rosario Dawson’s small role were also definite highlights.

The only thing that frustrated me during Someone Great is when the momentum slowed down a little and I found myself thinking, ‘OK, OK! You’ve already established the intimacy between the three friends. So please move the story along!’ I may or may not have said that out loud.

The part I liked most overall is actually the voice over towards the end because it’s so beautifully written.

Watch Someone Great for the writing… and all the other reasons mentioned above.

Someone Great is a new comedy / romance from writer / director Jennifer Kaytin Robinson – and featuring a cast that includes Gina Rodriguez, LaKeith Stanfield, DeWanda Wise and Britanny Snow.

Rodriguez plays Jenny who’s on a mission to enjoy one last New York City adventure with her two best friends; and all following a devastating breakup on the eve of her cross-country move to San Francisco…

I’m most interested in the chemistry between the three female leads and what is hopefully beautiful images of both New York City and San Francisco.

Faith Logan, Peter Vack, Ben Sidell, Kenneth De Abrew, Salvatore DiSanto, Thomas Kopache and David Granados also star.

SORRY TO BOTHER YOU (2018): New Trailer From Lakeith Stanfield, Tessa Thompson, Armie Hammer…

Tessa Thompson, Armie Hammer and Lakeith Stanfield are the stars of Sorry To Bother You, a comedy / fantasy film based in an alternate present-day version of Oakland, USA.

Written and directed by Boots Riley, Stanfield plays a telemarketer who discovers a magical key to professional success; a key that propels him into…

I’ve been waiting for something crazy and fun; I think this is it! Having seen Get Out (2017), I do rather hope that Stanfield’s character gets out ‘alive’ this time.

This movie really looks as though it was plenty of fun to be part of; I’m smiling just thinking about the onset giggles.

Patton Oswalt, Terry Crews, David Cross, Omari Hardwick and Danny Glover also star.

Sorry To Bother You Release Dates: July 6th, 2018 (US)…

THE INCREDIBLE JESSICA JAMES (2017): The Things I Liked…

The Incredible Jessica James (2017), Jessica Williams
The Incredible Jessica James (2017), Jessica Williams

The Incredible Jessica James is not a super hero movie as I first thought. It is in fact a comedy about an aspiring New York based playwright played by Jessica Williams. Williams is an actor who’s not completely new to me thanks to People Places Things (2015)one of my favourite comedies of 2015.

The story, written and directed by Jim Strouse who also wrote and directed  People Places Things, centres around Miss James’s friendship with a guy called Boone (Chris O’Dowd). A friendship that begins whilst Miss Jones is on the rebound from a break-up.

There are definitely one or two scenes at the beginning of this movie where I thought, ‘the camera is definitely spending too long on this moment’. Luckily for me, as the film progressed, I just liked it more and more. Williams did a good job of portraying all that is incredible about Miss James and I enjoyed the writing, especially as I found that I identify with Miss James in a number of ways. To mention just one way (you may relate to this too), I too have a slightly less than ordinary dream that also requires much dedication.

Noël Wells, an actor I first saw in Aziz Ansari’s rather good series Master Of None was a highlight. I also loved O’Dowd who was as always a delight to watch in comedy / drama roles.

By the end of The Incredible Jessica James , my thoughts had evolved from ‘the camera is definitely spending too long on this moment’ to ‘Miss James may not wear a special suit or a cape, but she really is quite incredible’. Not only did I want to be as cool as Jessica James, but I’d decided that I’d definitely tune in in the event that this movie were turned into a series.

Watch it and see.

CROWN HEIGHTS (2017): New Trailer From Lakeith Stanfield, Nestor Carbonell, Brian Tyree Henry, Zach Grenier…

Crown Heights (2017), Lakeith Stanfield
Crown Heights (2017), Lakeith Stanfield

In Crown Heights, Colin Warner is a young man wrongfully convicted of murder and his best friend Carl King devotes his life to proving Warner’s innocence. Written and directed by Matt Ruskin; Lakeith Stanfield, Nestor Carbonell, Brian Tyree Henry and Zach Grenier star…

This one I’ll watch for three reasons. Firstly I’m desperate for this story to end well – because so often in these circumstances it does not. Second, what a dream to have a friend like Carl King. He’s surely the best kind of friend anyone could  have. Third, Following Get Out (2017), I’d just love to see a character played by Stanfield actually escape his captors. That would make me happy indeed.

Bill Camp, Gbenga Akinnagbe, Yul Vazquez, Hunter Emery Josh Pais and Natalie Paul also star.

WAR MACHINE (2017): New Trailer Starring Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton, Will Poulter…

War Machine (2017), Brad Pitt
War Machine (2017), Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt, Tilda Swinton and Will Poulter’s latest movie, War Machine is a satire of America’s war with Afghanistan. Directed by David Michôd, the comedy/ drama focuses on the people running the war campaign…

I can’t wait to see this movie. Following the trailer for Bright (2017) starring Will Smith and Okja (2017) with Jake Gyllenhaal, War Machine is the third trailer in three days for a movie starring a Hollywood A-lister, that’s due to be released exclusively on Netflix. Interesting times indeed.

On another note, I kind of already inherently knew this but my goodness Brad Pitt is easy to watch. I guess it’s called charisma… among other things.

Emory Cohen, Ben Kingsley, Topher Grace, Scoot McNairy and Anthony Michael Hall also star.

War Machine Release Dates: May 26th, 2017, (UK); 2017 (US)…
