JURASSIC WORLD (2015): The Things I Liked…

Jurassic World (2018), Chris Pratt
Jurassic World (2018), Chris Pratt

Besides reminding me to be grateful that humans no longer share planet earth with dinosaurs, Jurassic World has officially awakened me to Chris Pratt’s super charismatic magic. A gift, when combined with a good script, among other things, the result is a thoroughly entertaining movie.

I’ve never been into dinosaurs myself. But director Colin Trevorrow’s film is a fun ride, one that features several wow moments. Impressive scenes courtesy of the special effects and a beautiful visual style.

Also starring Bryce Dallas Howard and Nick Robinson, Jurassic World takes place on the original site of Jurassic Park (1993); where a genetically modified hybrid dinosaur now exists. It’s when said dinosaur escapes and goes on a very well-captured killing spree, that the film’s action properly begins.

My overall favourite thing about this movie is pretty much every scene featuring Pratt. You know, on account of his charisma, plus the dialogue. There are also all the scenes with talented and adorable young actor Ty Simpkins, who plays Gray.

As for the things that spoilt this movie just a little for me, there’s the scene where Gray and his brother Zack (Robinson) can light a match, even though I could have sworn that matches are impossible to light when wet. Did I perhaps miss a part where it was revealed that the matches had been stored in a waterproof case? I think not! The second thing I didn’t quite buy into is the romantic love connection between Pratt and Dallas Howard’s characters.

You’ve probably already seen this movie, but if not, make time, because it’s fun and the shooting style is memorable. Also, do it for that Pratt on-screen magic, and especially if you love/or once loved dinosaurs.

LOVE, SIMON (2018): New Trailer From Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, Nick Robinson…

Read my spoiler free movie review of Love Simon.

Greg Berlanti directs Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel in Love, Simon; a new coming-of-age drama about the hilarious, scary, life-changing and complicated love story of a young closeted gay man.

As a friend pointed out, this movie may just be the first mainstream teen film where the central story is about the coming out of a young gay man. This isn’t a thing I’ve seen before. I could be wrong of course, but at this moment, I recall no other mainstream teenage movie with a gay male protagonist.

I’m therefore curious enough to watch it because of this uniqueness and because Nick Robinson wasn’t terrible in Everything, Everything (2017).

Talitha Eliana Bateman, Katherine Langford and Keiynan Lonsdale also star.

Love, Simon Release Dates: March 16th, 2018 (US & UK)…

EVERYTHING EVERYTHING (2017): The Thing I Liked…

Everything, Everything (2017), Amandla Stenberg, Nick Robinson
Everything, Everything (2017), Amandla Stenberg, Nick Robinson

Based on the book by Nicola Yoon, Everything, Everything is directed by Stella Meghie, and it’s the classic story of a girl (Maddy) who falls in love with the boy next door. The most interesting part of the story, for me, is the fact that Maddy has been confined to her home since infancy due to illness.

The two main characters in this movie are teenagers played by Amandla Stenberg and Nick Robinson. It’s therefore clear that teenagers are the target demographic; not that that stopped me from being most curious about the story of Maddy’s mother – a character we don’t really get to know too much about. I think that as a non-teenager myself, I’ve in the most part exhausted my interest in most largely-teenage movies. Except maybe in instances where a story is really, truly compelling and well cast.

I’m quite sure that teenage me would have really enjoyed this movie. However, non-teenage me found it OK. Non-teenage me is also very glad that she hadn’t read the book before watching this film. Otherwise, there’s a chance I personally would have found much less to look forward to towards the end.

The thing that stood out most for me about Everything, Everything is that its main stars, Stenberg and Robinson, are promising young actors. I now find myself looking forward to watching Stenberg in writer/director Ama Asante’s upcoming drama/romance, Where Hands Touch (2018) about a bi-racial teenager struggling to survive in Nazi Germany. Yes, yes, I know that it’s yet another teen-centric movie, but it’s Ama Asante. She wrote and directed Belle (2014), don’t you know?

EVERYTHING, EVERYTHING (2017); New Trailer Starring Amandla Stenberg, Nick Robinson, Anika Noni Rose…

Todays trailer is a perfect one for Valentines Day, especially if you’re a teenager.

At first  I thought this was the Amandla Stenberg film that she’s making with Amma Asante – director of Belle (2014) but instead, and not in a bad way, Everything, Everything is the story of a teenage girl who falls for the boy next door. Except, as is the case for many a love story, there’s a major obstacle in the way, she can’t go outside and never has because she’s allergic to everything.

It feels mighty cruel to release the trailer for a potentially good romantic film on Valentines Day instead of the actual film itself, doesn’t it?

FYI, that wonderful song at the end is Naughty Boy – Runnin’ (Lose It All) ft. Beyoncé, Arrow Benjamin.

Everything, Everything Release Dates: May 19th, 2017 (US)…

THE 5TH WAVE (2016): New Trailer Starring Chloe Grace Moretz & Liev Schreiber

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The 5th Wave (2016).

Apocalyptic films are here to stay, people! Here comes one more starring Chloe Grace Moretz.

The 5th Wave is intriguing. However,I like Moretz best in the original Kick-Ass (2010) movie. I found her performance just ‘so, so’ in If I Stay (2014). My fingers are crossed that The 5th Wave surprises me most pleasantly.

Live Schreiber, Maika Monroe, Ron Livingston, Maria Bello and Nick Robinson also star.

The 5th WaveRelease Dates: January 15th 2016 (U.S.), January 22nd 2016 ((U.K.)
