MISSION – IMPOSSIBLE – FALLOUT (2018): The Things I Liked…

Mission - Impossible - Fallout (2018), Rebecca Ferguson
Mission – Impossible – Fallout (2018), Rebecca Ferguson

I took a moment to remember how much fun I had watching Mission Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), before sitting down to Tom Cruise’s latest movie, Mission Impossible – Fallout.

The action sequences in Fallout are impressive, well-choreographed physical feats. You know, because it’s a Tom Cruise movie. Yet there was one moment at the beginning in the scene with the plutonium that felt too obvious as an action movie plot device – due to the way it was executed.  It was unfortunately a moment that made me feel that little bit less enthused about the rest of the film.

As the story progressed, I was adequately engaged but whilst also simultaneously concluding that I probably need to give this franchise a break. That way when I return in some years, it will all feel kind of fresh and new again.

Even though I definitely had more fun with Rogue Nation, Fallout is still a good movie. It’s just unfortunate that for me personally, more than any specific action sequence or scene, the most memorable thing about director Christopher McQuarrie’s film is that it helped me realise what a truly great face Rebecca Ferguson actually has. A totally random observation, I know. Yet I’m quite sure, thoroughly accurate.

Watch Mission Impossible – Fallout because it’s good. Who knows, it may even be your favourite.

SLAUGHTERHOUSE RULEZ (2018): New Trailer From Simon Pegg, Nick Frost, Michael Sheen…

In the latest comedy / horror movie from Simon Pegg, Nick Frost and Michael Sheen; a mysterious sinkhole appears at a fracking site near an illustrious British boarding school –  turning the school into quite the bloody battleground.

Directed and co-written by Crispian Mills; Hermione Corfield, Asa Butterfield and Jamie Blackley also star….

It looks like this may amuse me somewhat. I’m drawn to it in part because it reminds me of the fun ‘posh school’ sketches in Little Britain

Slaughterhouse Rulez Release Dates: October 31st, 2018 (UK)…

TERMINAL (2018): New Trailer From Margot Robbie, Simon Pegg, Mike Myers, Max Irons…

Terminal (2018), Margot Robbie

In Terminal, murderous consequences unravel in the dead of night as the lives of two assassins carrying out a sinister mission intertwine at the hands of a mysterious criminal mastermind hell-bent on revenge.

Margot Robbie, Simon Pegg, Max Irons and Mike Myers are directed by Vaughn Stein…

I don’t really know what’s going on in this trailer but I’m intrigued by the style and cinematography.

I generally like to see Margot Robbie win. I just wish that I wasn’t so very aware of her faux accent.

Terminal Release Dates: May 11th, 2018 (US)…

READY PLAYER ONE (2018): New Trailer From Steven Spielberg Starring Tye Sheridan,  T.J. Miller, Ben Mendelsohn, Hannah John-Kamen…

Ready Player One (2018)
Ready Player One (2018)

In Steven Spielberg’s latest movie Ready Player One, gamers compete inside a massive video game universe to find an ‘Easter egg’ (item, trivia or surprise buried within the game) hidden by the network’s recently deceased creator.

The finder of the Easter egg is promised the creator’s fortune. Soon enough Wade Watts (Tye Sheridan) becomes the first player to successfully navigate the first level of the test, leading to a high-stakes international race to crack the game’s code. Based on the novel by Ernest Cline, Ready Player One also stars  Hannah John-KamenT.J. MillerBen Mendelsohn, Simon Pegg, Mark Rylance…

I haven’t read the book so my mind is threatening to race with all the twists, turns and obstacles the story is likely to have, in order to keep things interesting. The promising special effects is another key reason to watch. I refuse to let Spielberg’s last disappointing movie (The BFG, 2016) prevent me from getting excited. I am officially looking forward to this story.

Ready Player One Release Dates: March 30th, 2018 (US & UK)…

FOR THE LOVE OF SPOCK (2016): New Trailer For Documentary About Leonard Nimoy & Star Trek’s Spock

For The Love Of Spock (2016) Leonard Nimoy
For The Love Of Spock (2016) Leonard Nimoy

For The Love Of Spock is a new documentary about the impact left by late Star Trek actor Leonard Nimoy, through his portrayal os Spock…

Directed by Nimoy’s son Adam, we get to hear from those who knew him personally, including  J. J. Abrams, William Shatner and Zachary Quinto.

I’m interested in this documentary because I’m aware that Nimoy and his famous character are much loved. I used to watch re-runs of Star Trek as a teenager so I’m curious to see what it is that’s special about Nimoy and his famous character. Something  tells me  that my young teenage brain probably missed a few things.  I do however recall that most famous line ‘Live long and prosper’ plus of course, the Vulcan salute.

The new trailer for the latest Star Trek movie just arrived…

Trailer 1

Trailer 2

I didn’t find myself particularly enthused after trailer one, on account of the peculiar music choice and me generally not being a ‘trekkie’ / massive Star Trek fan. However, trailer two is better and I’m certain  trekkies will likeit even more than I do.

Chris Pine, Zoe Saldana, Idris Elba, Zachary Quinto,  Sofia Boutella and Simon Pegg star whilst Justin Lin directs.

Release Date (s): July 22nd (US & UK)…

MISSION: IMPOSSIBLE 5 – ROGUE NATION (2015): Thrilling, Well Paced & Fun

Mission: Impossible 5 - Rogue Nation (2015), Tom Cruise
Mission: Impossible 5 – Rogue Nation (2015), Tom Cruise

The trailer for Mission: Impossible 5 – Rogue Nation is one of my favourites of 2015. The editing and promise of endless thrills are two of the reasons. Another is the rather reliable cast headed by Tom Cruise and including Ving Rhames, Rebecca Ferguson, Jeremy Renner, Alec Baldwin, Simon and Pegg.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie, Rogue Nation opens the way action movies ought to; precisely as it plans to go on – thrilling and fast paced. The film succeeds on delivering engaging dialogue, good humour and fun along with the thrills.

There are several great scenes that Impossible Missions Force (IMF) Agent, Ethan Hunt gets involved in. One of the best is the tense and well executed ’impossible’ section of the mission.

Hunt’s relationship with Benji (Simon Pegg) and the dialogue between his team members is another highlight. Watch it because it’s good.

HECTOR & THE SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS (2014): When Physical Distance Equals Clarity

Hector & The Search For Happiness (2014), Simon Pegg
Hector & The Search For Happiness (2014), Simon Pegg

Directed by Peter Chelsom and starring Simon Pegg, Hector & The Search For Happiness is about a man who realises that change must happen in his life.

Following this realisation, he checks out of his current situation and sets off in search of adventure and an answer to one big question.

During his search foe happiness and what it means, he meets several interesting characters, gets into a few scrapes here and learns plenty, especially about himself.

Chelsom’s movie has a few similarities to Eat Pray Love (2010) and The Secret Life of Walter Mitty (2013). Hector & The Search For Happiness isn’t a terrible movie, but I do prefer the other two.

Whether you need convincing that travel is a good idea or not, this movie does a good job of reminding you of travel’s great ability to help you see things with renewed clarity; whether it’s because of the people you meet whilst away or the physical distance from your daily routine.

For clarity, get some distance.

Happy Hector & The Search For Happiness 🙂
