From writer/director Mark Cousins, My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock is a new documentary about the celebrated filmmaker whose illustrious career spanned five decades.
Cousins’s film features a fictional Alfred Hitchcock narrating and explaining some of the lesser-known cinematic techniques employed in his movies.
We can expect rich illustrations with clips from the director’s entire career; plus, well-known names such as Cary Grant, Sean Connery and Paul Newman, to name a few.
Interesting concept, isn’t it? Getting a fictional Hitchcock to narrate a documentary about himself.
I confess to not knowing as much about Hitchcock as I probably should. I also haven’t watched most of his films. What I know is that, so far, Rear Window (1954) is likely my favourite. Perhaps, My Name Is Alfred Hitchcock will kickstart an exploration.

Happy Film Loving,

I love him as a director and have seen every film I can find, but not a great human. I look forward to seeing this
Interesting. I wonder if this documentary will touch on his reputation as a human. I’m guessing not.
it may, some of the films i’ve seen about him definitely went into that
Good point. I like the sound of that. Documentaries do usually have to be somewhat balanced to do a good job.
I remember the scene in Rear Window with the cameras below the floor. 🤩
Me too! Time for a re-watch, I think.
I hope they have some things from a female p.o.v. in there. I heard that he did some risky things in his movies to get the effects he wanted.
I hope so, too. I’m excited to learn about what drove him. This should be fun.
I would see it, I grew up watching all the films, The Birds terrified me as a kid, Psycho too, but so good!
I’ve heard about The Birds scaring many. But now, since the special effects are quite dated, I imagine that it would be less scary now, right?
Very true, it’s almost funny now, but still, Hitchcock did it so well back in the day!
He was pretty special. Thank goodness was for all the uber creatives! 🤓🙏
Honestly, I have not thought of him for a while. I would have to check how many of his movies I’ve seen. Because as I kid I’ve seen some on the TV not knowing anything about him. Then as a teenager when became a more serious movie buff, I started to explore various names of the world cinema, but at the time it was not easy to find movies on VHS, so I could not see all I wanted (and had time for). As a proper adult, I can’t remember if I’ve seen any of his classics. Definitely time to rewatch some of them.
This documentary looks like it’s gonna get into his movie techniques, so I doubt there will be much if anything on his personal life. This is fine because for sure there’s been plenty said before, so I welcome a more narrowly focused documentary.
The techniques-only focus is indeed likely. I would put Rear Window on right now if it wasn’t my schedule requiring that I go to the gym within the next hour.
I hope you get to see a classic very soon. 🥂
While I’m not obsessive about the director (yet), Hitchcock is def one of my favs. My Dad got me an encyclopedic book about him two years ago, which I need to finish. Your post reminds me! Rear Window is so engaging, isn’t it? My fav is Vertigo. Hitchcock wanted his golden girl, Grace Kelley for Vertigo but settled for Kim Novak, and was vocal about his disappointment. I think Novak is perfect in that role though… Psycho gave rise to the modern slasher. One of GOATS for sure!
That encyclopedic book is a great gift! 🙏 What’s the title and author? Perhaps I’ll treat myself or visit the library.
Vertigo is now on my to-watch list. I’ll try not to think of Grace Kelly when I watch Novak in the role. I think Psycho is the first Hitchcock film I saw as part of a media studies class on slasher horror movies when I was a seventeen-year-old student. Another very engaging film. Poor Norman!
Book is just called, “Hitchock” by Truffaut. Yes, poor Norman! Minus the murder spree… the guy is a post-modern hero. Way ahead of his time with the multiple personalities lol Excited to read your Rear Window review!
Excellent, thank you. 🙏
I forgot about the ‘spree’ part regarding the murder. Likely because the killing of Janet Leigh’s character proved so iconic, everything else was erased from my memory. 😁
Big fan of his films. Even watched his TV show. It would be interesting to see this.
I didn’t know he had a TV show. What a busy, busy man he was. 🤓 I’m very excited about the ones I haven’t seen yet.
He adapted short stories. They were so good he used them for Psycho
No wonder Psycho is as iconic as it is. 🤓
