I remember enjoying The Old Guard (2020), Netflix’s action/fantasy film about immortal covert mercenaries tasked with protecting humanity. The story and fight sequences stood out in a good way.
Four/five years later, Charlize Theron, Matthias Schoenaerts and KiKi Layne return in The Old Guard 2. This time, the group has to deal with the resurfacing of a long-lost immortal while also facing a powerful new enemy.
The good news? I still had fun. However, the fight sequences in the first movie were stronger, mainly because I wasn’t waiting for them to end so the story could move forward. Either the action went on too long this time, or it just didn’t feel as sharp. That said, the story itself remains pretty strong, even if a few moments felt clichéd.
There are at least four years between the two films, which, in my opinion, is too long. I’m sure the Hollywood strikes didn’t help, but I’m starting to think this franchise might work better as a mini-series. That way, we wouldn’t have to wait so long between instalments, assuming a third one is coming, of course.
Have you seen The Old Guard 2? What did you think?
Happy Film Loving,
G
Gia, I didn’t know it existed. Is it on Netflix? If so, I will be watching it. Glad 3 of the original cast are back.
It did come and go somewhat quietly, to be fair.
I hope you enjoy. 🤓🥂
I would love for this to be a series instead of separate films, too, which speaks to my impatient sensibilities.
We can be impatient together. 🤓🥂
But more than that, it just makes more sense story-wise if it were a series. But perhaps not for the actors who need freedom to work on other projects.
Couldn’t agree with this review more, G. My feelings exactly, including the smaller series avenue for this franchise going forward.
High five and cheers to that, Bruce. 🤓🥂 I suspect actor freedom to do other things may be a contributing factor to why this is not a series. Perhaps they’ll surprise us and turn it into a series. 🙏🙏🤞🤞
Going to have to watch to find out if Uma Thurman is the “long-lost resurfacing immortal” or “powerful new enemy” Or neither! (but I’m guessing she’s one of those)😁
I’m saying nothing! 😁🥂
I need to first see the first one. 😀
So no idea when I’ll get to it. I do like the idea of Uma and Charlize together.
The ever-growing watch list of the movie fanatic. 😁 Oh, how we suffer, gladly. ☺️
