OBSESSION (2025): The Things I Liked…

Writer/director Curry Barker’s Obsession is quite a pleasant surprise, as far as the movies I’ve seen in 2026 go. That’s unexpected, coming from someone who generally gives horror movies a wide berth for the sake of restful sleep.

It wasn’t the trailer that had me curious, but rather the title, even more so after learning of the film’s huge financial success, costing less than a million dollars to make, yet it grossed over $400 million globally.

Starring Inde Navarrette, Michael Johnston and Cooper Tomlinson, Obsession takes us along to see what happens when a hopeless romantic wishes that his crush were in love with him.

I’ll start by saying that I did not find a single dull moment as this movie played. Secondly, the performances are excellent, which is exactly what Barker’s film deserved, considering how thoughtfully and non-casually his story approached the topic of a wish.

My only criticism is this: I know the budget was low, but my goodness, that dead-animal prosthetic at the beginning was embarrassing.

Still, ‘Wow! Very refreshing!’ remains my honest reaction to this highlight of my movie-loving 2026.

Watch it if you’re curious. I’ve had zero nightmares post-viewing.

Happy Film Loving,

G

  1. Great! I’m happy you got round to this one. It’s a special one, for sure.

  2. This movie was truly amazing and something that should make Hollywood wake up about the world of cinema. It was well directed, the photography was amazing and with beautiful shadows and lights in contrast. The tension was well built and the story was amazing, especially in a way to describe toxic relationship and how Bear seemed a nice guy but turned out as one of the most selfish and disgusting man ever seen. And Nikki character was amazing and I’m happy that she basically became an horror icon.

    1. I’m glad you also had a good time, and I agree with many of the points you’ve made. Writer/director Curry Barker is one to watch for sure. I just hope that his next film he makes won’t be too scary for my disposition.

  3. G, I did a doubletake when I saw you had seen this, only because I believed you usually steered clear of horror films. I am so glad you enjoyed it, and the fact you did carries weight with me. I have read a good bit about it, but am passing for now until it gets to the small screen. Really not sure if it will be one Mrs. B and I take a liking to, but we’ll check it out down the road. Barker certainly has positioned himself well for at least his next couple of projects. Huge success at the box office.

  4. I just watched Obsession after obsessing over its success for the last few months. Funny enough, I had nightmares before watching the movie because it was constantly on my mind. I think I made the right decision not to see it in theaters, because it made me jump more than a few times. I can only imagine how it would’ve been in a theater filled with a screaming audience. I don’t mind watching horror movies, but I definitely commend your bravery for watching it.
