THE PAINTER AND THE THIEF (2020): The Things I Liked…

An interesting character study is what I was expecting director Benjamin Ree’s documentary The Painter and the Thief to be; the story of Czech artist Barbora Kysilkova. Specifically the unexpected bond she forms with Karl Bertil-Nordland, the troubled man who stole her paintings from a gallery in broad daylight.

Ree’s film is indeed a good character study. We get to learn some detail about Karl and Barbora’s stories, leading me to realise why their friendship makes sense. It’s just that I had additional questions that didn’t get answered. Particularly concerning detail about Karl’s childhood, his mother and two siblings.

By the end, I couldn’t help but think about how lucky both Karl and Barbora were to have met very important people in their lives. Especially at a time when they least expected it. In Barbora’s case, it’s meeting her husband and arguably Karl. And for Karl, it’s of course, meeting the extraordinary and compassionate Barbora. The latter case making The Painter and the Thief another memorable story of a beautiful and very unexpected friendship.

Other key moments that stood out include the specific scene that shows how truly transformative and powerful art can be. There’s also the satisfying footage of when Barbora is seen in her element while drawing and painting. Lastly, the footage of the open, honest and respectful dialogue between Barbora and her husband.

Watch The Painter and the Thief if you’re curious. I’m glad I saw it even though I wish that more of my questions had been answered.

THE PAINTER AND THE THIEF (2020): New Trailer For Documentary about Barbora Kysilkova, The Czech Artist Who Befriended The Man Who Stole Her Paintings

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The Painter and the Thief (2020).

Directed by Benjamin Ree, The Painter and the Thief is a new documentary about Czech artist Barbora Kysilkova. After two of her paintings are stolen, Kysilkova seeks out the culprit and asks him to sit for a portrait.

What follows is an inextricable bond between the artist and thief. The kind of bond that leads to Kysilkova becoming the thief’s closest ally when he’s severely hurt in a car crash and needs full time care.

My hope is that things don’t end too badly for either party, especially Kysilkova.

This trailer also has me thinking about the lengths a person will go in the name of loneliness without even realising that loneliness is the motivator. I’m looking forward to understanding what Ree’s film has to say about the specific human experiences of her very interesting subjects.

From director Halina Dyrschka, Beyond The Visible – Hilma af Klint is a new documentary about the world’s first abstract artist, Hilma af Klint. A Swedish female artist who for many years was nowhere to be found in art history books.

Today Klint is abstractions biggest discovery and attracting millions of fans worldwide.

Looking at the beautiful images in this trailer and the ones on the website of the Guggenheim Museum NY, Klint is officially one of my favourites.

I’ll be watching for the truth and definitely to feast my eye s on all those colours and shapes.

Struggle – The Life and Lost Art of Szukalski is a new documentary about Stanislav Szukalski; an eccentric Polish artist and self proclaimed genius. He’s one of the greatest artists most have never heard of.

Directed by Ireneusz Dobrowolski and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio; other key contributors include  Glenn Bray, George DiCaprio and Stanislav Szukalski.

I’m in for the story of a person  who survived some truly challenging times. I want to know the story behind his art and I’m interested in his psychology.

There’s also the connection with the DiCaprios that intrigues me.

THE PRICE OF EVERYTHING (2018): New Trailer For Documentary About Contemporary Art…

The Price Of Everything (2018)
The Price Of Everything (2018)

Directed by  Nathaniel Kahn, The Price Of Everything promises a close look at the role of art in today’s consumerist society. Particularly the rarefied world of  contemporary art where everything can be bought and sold.

Featured artists and art enthusiasts include Jeff Koons, Amy Cappellazzo, George Condo, Njideka Akunyili Crosby, Marilyn Minter…

I appreciate all  art  forms and my favourite kind is film. However, I can’t imagine ever being convinced that art is more important than life. I guess that’s a reason to watch this film. Perhaps I may even be inspired afresh to pick up my paintbrush.
