Archenemy follows Max Fist (Joe Manganiello), a man who claims to be a hero from another dimension. And since he fell through time and space to earth, he finds that he has no powers; plus no one has believed his stories. That is until he crosses paths with a local teenager named Hamster.

Co-written and directed by Adam Egypt Mortimer; Glenn Howerton, Skylan Brooks and Zolee Griggs are among the key cast.

This one I’m giving a chance to because it has that underground, gritty vibe that Jamie Foxx’s rather fun Project Power (2020) had.

I also want to know more about if/when Max will be able to return to his dimension – and I’m in for another deconstructions of the superhero movie genre. So far, In addition to Archenemy and Project Power, there’s Prime Video’s The Boys; a series that’s been recommended to me a few times now. Are there any others?

Lastly, isn’t the shot in the above image just great? I’m sure it has a special name in movie making circles but the last time I recall seeing something similar and loving it was in the trailer for another superhero movie, Fantastic Four (2015).

Paul Scheer, Mac Brandt, Kieran Gallagher, Amy Seimetz, Joseph D. Reitman, Amje Elharden and Christopher Guyton also star.

Archenemy Release Dates: December 11th, 2020 (US)…

SOUTHPAW (2015): Nothing New But Good Performances All Round

Southpaw (2015), Jake Gyllenhaal
Southpaw (2015), Jake Gyllenhaal

Antoine Fuqua is the man in the director’s seat for Southpaw, the movie where Jake Gyllenhaal stars as Billy Hope, a successful boxer seeking redemption after an unbearable tragedy derails his life completely.

Gyllenhaal’s physical transformation is noticeably impressive but it comes second to everything he manages to achieve with his character’s emotional journey.

As you watch the movie, you may find yourself cursing testosterone for being the cause of at least one of the bad things that happens to Hope. However, what seems like an absence of good sense likely also plays a large part.

Overall, there’s nothing particularly surprising or refreshingly new in Southpaw. Though there is one key aspect of the plot that would have been a great surprise – had it not been revealed in the trailer months prior.

Watch Southpaw because you like the filmmaking team and you’re curious about the movie’s exploration of redemption, regret, second chances, starting over and of course, the sport of boxing.

Forrest Whitaker, Naomie Harris and Rachel McAdams also star.
