This one isn’t a movie but a six part TV mini-series  I just had to feature it because it looks pretty good and if I’m completely honest, I really find the sound  and music in this trailer to be quite magnificent. I like it so much I’d actually appreciate a three minute long version to listen to more than 3 times.

If I had to guess, I’d say that that spine tingling instrument that comes in near the beginning and definitely at the very end is a xylophone.

Jay Paulson, Shoniqua Shandai, Quintyne Lawrence, Justin Cornwell, Alexander Kanellakos and Hayley Marie Norman also star.

I Am The Night Release Dates: January 28th, 2019 (US)…

THE TITAN (2018): It’s…

The Titan (2018), Sam Worthington

Starring Sam Worthington, Taylor Schilling and Tom Wilkinson, The Titan is a sci-fi film about a military family who agree to take part in a ground-breaking experiment of genetic evolution and space exploration.

My experience of director Lennart Ruff’s film, similarly to other recent Netflix films I’ve seen can be characterised by disappointment. What intrigued me most about the film in the first place was the subject matter, definitely more so  than the actors. Sadly though, when the thing I’d been waiting for all along, namely the physical manifestation of the genetic evolution began to show in Worthington’s character’s body, instead of thinking ‘wow that’s pretty impressive,’ I instead found it and the film as a whole to be very basic. Perhaps a higher budget could have helped. To that I say, ‘sure’ as long as a sizeable chunk of the money went into producing a more well thought out story that is actually exciting.

Is it possible that I’ve just been expecting too much from Netflix movies? Is that my real problem? I’m certainly starting to think so. On the other hand, who can blame me really when the first Netflix movie I ever saw was Cary Joji Fukunaga’s memorable and rather impressive Beasts Of No Nation (2015)?

Watch The Titan if you must but only if you you absolutely must.

BOOMERANG (1992): The Things I Liked…

Boomerang (1992), Eddie Murphy
Boomerang (1992), Eddie Murphy

Co-written by Eddie Murphy and directed by Reginald Hudlin, 1992 comedy/drama Boomerang centres around  a successful executive/womaniser named Marcus (Murphy).

Marcus finds that his lifestyle choices have come back to haunt him following the arrival of his new female boss.

Also starring Robin Givens, Halle Berry, Chris Rock, Grace Jones and Martin Lawrence, Boomerang is a movie I enjoyed today as much as I did when I first saw it as a teenager. The film is funny. It also features one of the most memorable versions of a player/womaniser that I’ve ever seen on film.

Hudlin’s movie is beautifully produced; from the clothes, location(s), lighting, humour and more. Another highlight is the fact that most if not all of the women in this movie are empowered and powerful. I also couldn’t help but notice that Givens is truly one of the most beautiful women ever. Her character is fun, stunning and very much in charge.

The one thing I noticed that perhaps isn’t particularly great about Boomerang is Martin Lawrence’s acting skills. Beyond that, it’s fun, funny and quite the visual feast, in more ways than one. Watch it, I say!
