At Eternity’s Gate is a Julian Schnabel-directed biography that takes us inside the world and mind of a person who, despite scepticism, ridicule and illness, created some of the world’s most beloved and stunning works of art.
If you hadn’t already guessed based on the above picture, the artist in question is, of course, Vincent van Gogh who’s played by Willem Dafoe.
Also starring Mads Mikkelsen, Oscar Isaac and Rupert Friend, At Eternity’s Gate features scenes based on Van Gogh’s letters, common agreement about events in his life that present as facts, hearsay, as well as purely invented moments.
Other key cast includes Mathieu Amalric, Emmanuelle Seigner and Niels Arestrup.
This trailer reminds me so much of how painful the lives of many great artists often are. ‘Maybe God made me a painter for people who aren’t born yet.’ Such heartbreaking words because of all that it could possibly mean.
Definitely looking forward to this one and I’m quite sure that Dafoe and Mikkelsen will do a wonderful job in their roles.
At Eternity’s Gate release Dates: November 16th, 2018 (US)…

Happy Film Loving,

Looks intense.
Definitely. It also has me wondering precisely which parts of the film will be ‘purely invented moments.’
I knew that Willem Dafoe will play the lead role, but somehow I did not realise until now that Mads Mikkelsen, Oscar Isaac and Rupert Friend are all attached to this film. So, exciting! Thanks for the great post.
I think the film may just inspire me to take a trip to a van Gogh exhibit post viewing. Glad you like the post and thank you. 🤓
It looks inspirational, does not it? It is curious because not so long ago I completed the list – 20 Fascinating Films about Visual Art: https://dbmoviesblog.wordpress.com/2018/06/15/20-fascinating-films-about-visual-art/
I am sure now that At Eternity’s Gate also belongs somewhere at the very top of this list – it just looks so good.
I bet it bugs you right now that you can’t ad At Eternity’s Gate to that list immediately! 😁
I agree with you completely about how great it looks. I can’t wait to see the way director Julian Schnabel puts the story together. Especially whilst knowing that a film about visual art also pretty much has to be visually stunning.
