ODE TO JOY (2019): The Things I Liked…

Ode To Joy (2019), Morena Baccarin, Jake Lacy
Ode To Joy (2019), Morena Baccarin, Jake Lacy

Starring Martin Freeman, Morena Bacarrin, Jake Lacy and Melissa Rauch, I laughed several times during Jason Winer’s latest comedy, Ode To Joy. In fact, thanks to a number of fresh jokes I didn’t quite see coming, I can say that Ode To Joy is responsible for some of my most memorable funny movie moments of 2019.

At the heart of the story is Charlie (Freeman), a man who experiences sudden paralysis every time he feels strong emotions – mainly joy. Having developed several techniques for avoiding too much happiness and pleasure over time, things of course get quite complicated for Charlie when he falls in love.

Much of the good comedy in Ode To Joy happens as we learn about the uniqueness of Charlie’s experience of living with his condition, and this is when the film shines most for me. As such, I admit that I found myself wishing that the balance had shifted more in favour of comedy than it did. Especially since when I wasn’t laughing, I was noticing the cliches, imperfections and moments when the suspension of my disbelief was failing.

Overall, I’m still happy I watched Ode To Joy because of the humour, mostly, but also because of the unexpected but welcome reminder that occurred to me as the film played. In other words, the fact that there are many joy-inducing moments out there in the world as we go about our day, if we just pay attention.

Other joy-inducing moments I experienced courtesy of Ode To Joy include Baccarin’s character’s relationship with her aunt, Charlie’s connection with his brother and last but not least, the clip hidden in the middle of the credits. at the end. You’ll miss it if you stop too soon once the movie ends, so don’t.

Watch Ode To Joy. You too may find it, though not perfect but quite refreshing and funny in parts.

THE REPORT (2019): New Trailer From Adam Driver, Jon Hamm, Michael C. Hall, Annette Bening…

The Report (2019), Adam Driver

Adam Driver, Jon Hamm, Michael C. Hall and Annette Bening are the stars of The Report, a new drama set in the aftermath of 9/11.

Written/directed by Scott Z. Burns, the story is focused on the CIA agents involved in using extreme interrogation tactics as they try to find those responsible.

First of all, this is a perfectly edited trailer. Loving the sound, the voices, music and perhaps most of all, the dialogue. I couldn’t help but think of Aaron Sorkin as I listened.

Also, I’ve really been enjoying Driver’s movie choices recently. As such, I can hardly wait to take in all the greatness that this one seems to promise.

Corey Stoll, Michael C. Hall, Maura Tierney, Ben McKenzie, Matthew Rhys, Tim Blake Nelson and Ted Levine also star.

The Report Release Dates: November 15th, 2019 (US)…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Bombshell (2019).

Bombshell is a new biography/drama starring Margot Robbie, Charlize Theron and Nicole Kidman.

Directed by Jay Roach, Bombshell is based on the true story of the women who decided to take on Fox News boss Roger Ailes, and the toxic male culture presiding at the network.

As this trailer played, I thought, ‘That’s definitely Margot Robbie and I think that’s Charlize Theron. And look! Nicole Kidman?‘ In other words, well done to the makeup and prosthetics people.

I’m sure this will be great Though I imagine also not the easiest to watch. I’m looking forward to hearing all the ladies speak in the accents of Megyn Kelly (Theron), Kayla Pospisil (Robbie) and Gretchen Carlson (Kidman).

Connie Britton, Allison Janney, Alice Eve, Kate McKinnon, Alanna Ubach, Stephen Root, Brigette Lundy-Paine, Nazanin Boniadi, John Lithgow and Elisabeth Röhm also star.

Bombshell Release Dates: December 20th, 2019 (US)…

Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson, Laura Dern and Ray Liotta are the stars of the latest Noah Baumbach-directed comedy/drama, Marriage Story.

It follows a stage director (Driver), his actor wife (Johansson) and their unfolding divorce that spans from New York City to Los Angeles.

What a beautiful editing job. I was smiling and then sad within seconds. Considering Driver’s characters many admirable attributes, I’m looking forward to finding out the detail of where it all went horribly wrong.

Already, I can’t wait for more of the comedy. I loved the ‘I cried four times’ ‘Me Too’ moment.

Merritt Wever, Julie Hagerty, Alan Alda, Mark O’Brien, Ayden Mayeri and Mary Hollis Inboden also star.

I AM PATRICK SWAYZE (2019): The Things I Liked…

I Am Patrick Swayze (2019), Patrick Swayze
I Am Patrick Swayze (2019), Patrick Swayze

A ‘loving tribute’ is exactly what writer/director Adrian Buitenhuis’s documentary, I Am Patrick Swayze is. Well-paced and structured, I didn’t realise how little I knew about Swayze until the documentary was over.

Including Swayze’s own words, I Am Patrick Swayze features former colleagues, friends and family who had many things to say about the late actor. I learned some truths, a few of which are heartbreaking, but certainly facts that made me realise just how much it really took, physically and otherwise, for Swayze to become the successful artist he came to be.

There’s no doubt in my mind that I’d have been crushing hard on Swayze during my teenage years, had I been born sooner than I was. Besides his movie star looks, I feel that Demi Moore really said it well with the words ‘I think he had a beautiful balance between strength and softness.’

I may have shed a few tears but a good time is definitely what I had as I learned about my would-be teenage crush; while also realising that overall, he seems to have been a rather decent human being.

To all Swayze fans, I say make time for this documentary. It’s one and a half hours of no regrets. All I need to do now is figure out precisely when I can watch/rewatch Ghost (1990), Dirty Dancing (1987), Point Break (1991) and several of Swayze’s other best works.

How familiar are you with Swayze’s story?
