The Crow is one of those movies I’ve heard about often over the years. Now that I’ve finally seen it, more than the subject matter, my knowledge of director Alex Proyas’s film was limited to the fact that lead actor Brandon Lee was tragically killed on set.
The story of The Crow centres around Eric Draven (Lee), a man who comes back to life after being brutally murdered, along with his girlfriend; his sole mission being to avenge their deaths.
As an action/crime/drama which was largely well-received by audiences, my favourite thing about The Crow is Lee’s stunt work and the engaging way he moved as Eric, especially after his death.
It may be the case that, for the 90s, The Crow was groundbreaking and impressive. But for me, everything outside of Lee’s performance didn’t prove especially memorable or particularly noteworthy, even as someone who appreciates a good vengeance movie. As such, I’m curious about what you think of The Crow. Are you a big fan and therefore, excited about the upcoming remake starring Bill Skarsgard?

I can’t believe I am not the only person on the planet who never watched The Crow! Yeah, lots of hype at the time, I didn’t know they are doing a remake, I guess I would want to watch the original first! 😉

Oh nice, you pulled the trigger on this cult classic! I still have to rewatch it after about 2 decades. But I must before the remake comes out.
I do feel that it has very 90s aesthetics that in general do not age well. I feel similar about the 80s, but I was a young teenager then and for some reason nostalgia is very strong in me for that decade. T2 is a 90s classic that aged well, so it depends on how heavily a particular production leaned on the moviemaking trends of the decade.

Sometimes we just can’t tell how something is going to age, unfortunately. I agree that leaning too heavily into trends is rarely the best idea. Perhaps it’s better if one starts the trend. I.e. Inception (2010) started more than one trend and I feel it still continues to age beautifully in several ways. One can only guess how well The Crow remake will age in 30+ years. 🤞🤞
I think ALex Proyas went more than a bit far by saying that any money made from a remake of The Crow is ‘blood money.’ I also disagree that Brandon ‘gave his life’ for The Crow. His life was tragically taken against his will. Lastly, the whole idea of remakes fully suck 99% of the time. However, I get it when it comes to a reimagining for a new generation and modern times. Especially because not everyone reaches for the older movies and those stories are still worth retelling for the youths.
I’ve clearly stopped being mad at remakes because they simply won’t stop and I accept that. 🤓
