Directed by James Hawes, The Amateur is a new action/thriller starring Rami Malek, Holt McCallany, Rachel Brosnahan and Caitríona Balfe.

Malek plays a CIA Cryptographer on a mission to find the terrorists who murdered his wife.

This feels like a story for all the underestimated, the misunderstood, the misclassified, the incorrectly categorised, the misjudged and the unseen. You know, like that student whose skills can’t come to light in a ‘one size fits all standardised test.

This absolutely speaks to my vengeance story-loving heart. Dare I say, it’s kind of like John Wick but for the computer smart. Am I right or am I right?

Lastly and randomly, I think ‘Cryptographer’ and one of my favourite movies, The Imitation Game (2014), comes to mind because Turing was a Cryptanalyst.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Back in Action (2025).

Directed by Seth Gordon, Back in Action is the latest action/comedy starring Cameron Diaz and Jamie Foxx.

Foxx and Diaz play former CIA spies pulled back into espionage after their secret identities are leaked.

The trope of former assassins and the like getting pulled back in seems to be in fashion lately. Especially based on Love Hurts (2025) and The Family Plan (2023).

Still, it feels great to see Diaz back. Particularly in a movie that looks like plenty of fun, based on this trailer. The pairing with Foxx feels, to me, like a great decision.

Bring on the fun, I say!

It’s that time gain. Time for the impossible to be made possible because Mission Impossible – The Final Reckoning is coming.

Directed by Christopher McQuarrie; Tom Cruise, Hannah Waddingham, Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Ving Rhames and more are among the key cast.

Based on the title alone, you’d be forgiven for thinking this is the last Mission Impossible movie starring Tom Cruise. Then again, how many times has Daniel Day-Lewis retired from acting only to come back? How many Clint Eastwood movies have been mistakenly labelled as his last?

Either way, it looks as though it’s time for my MI movie hiatus to end. Time to watch the last two films I’m yet to see.

What are your feelings about Mission Impossible 8?

FLIGHT RISK (2024): New Trailer Starring Mark Wahlberg, Topher Grace, Michelle Dockery…

Directed by Mel Gibson; Flight Risk is a new action/thriller starring Mark Wahlbeg, Michelle Dockery and Topher Grace. One in which not all parties aboard a very important flight are who they say they are.

First came Jason Bateman as a terrorist in Carry-On (2024). Now we have Wahlberg, who’s usually a hero who saves the day, playing a very bad man intent on perverting the course of justice.

I’m interested in what will hopefully be gripping mid-air action. I also want to see how quickly I’ll get used to Wahlberg as a balding baddie.

How do you feel about Flight Risk so far? I’m hopeful because Gibson is a good director as confirmed via Apocalypto (2006).

CARRY-ON (2024): New Trailer Starring Taron Egerton, Jason Bateman, Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler…

New action/crime/thriller Carry-On stars Taron Egerton as a young TSA agent, while Jason Bateman is the mysterious traveller who blackmails him into letting a dangerous package onto a Christmas day flight.

Directed by Jaume Collet-Serra; additional key cast includes Sofia Carson, Danielle Deadwyler, Theo Rossi and Logan Marshall-Green.

This is one of those films I both want to see and don’t want to see in equal measure.

Egerton and ‘the saving of the day’ are why I’m interested. The idea of someone hell-bent on wrecking ‘the most wonderful time of the year’ for so many is why I’m less enthused. Especially when the release date is close to the most wonderful time of the year.

There’s also having to accept the generally likeable Bateman in the role of someone ruthless enough to attempt something so awful. Perhaps the story is complex, and Bateman’s character isn’t just pure evil. one wonders.

I’m curious, what are your thoughts on the Carry-On trailer?
