HAPPILY (2021): The Thing I Liked…

Happily (2021), Joel McHale, Kerry Bishé, Paramount Movies
Happily (2021), Joel McHale, Kerry Bishé, Paramount Movies

Happily, a comedy/romance about a happily married couple whose life takes an unexpected turn is a self-aware, self-indulgent movie that has one or two moments that are mildly satisfying. Unfortunately, for me, none of these moments adds up to enough to make the experience worthwhile.

What Happily has to say about relationships and marriage did not need a whole movie to say it. At least not in the way it said it. Furthermore, what Happily ends up saying is unlikely to be what you wish it had to say.

Writer/director BenDavid Grabinski’s film relies heavily on music to create a tense atmosphere. And I kept watching past the halfway point, hoping that the pay-off would make all the excessive atmospheric music and seemingly unnecessary slow-motion shots somewhat worthwhile, but no.

As for what I enjoyed about the movie, I like Joel McHale and Natalie Morales.

Lastly, watch Happily ONLY if you absolutely must, because there has to be far better marital/relationship drama movies out there. I’m also sure there are good TV shows about ’best couples’ whose friends are jealous that their own relationships aren’t as passionate. I can’t think of any titles right now, but I know they exist, good ones!

SPIRAL (2021): New Trailer Starring Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella, Morgan David Jones…

Spiral (2020), Samuel L. Jackson, Lionsgate Movies
Spiral (2020), Samuel L. Jackson, Lionsgate Movies

The book of Saw has a terrifying new chapter.

Staring Chris Rock, Samuel L. Jackson, Max Minghella and Morgan David Jones; crime/horror Spiral is about a criminal mastermind’s unleashing of a twisted form of justice.

I’m intrigued because I want to see Rock do well in this lead role. And I like the idea of one of my favourite comics sharing screen time with Jackson.

However, the reason I may not see Spiral includes the fact that I’m yet to watch a single movie in the Saw series; mainly on account of horror not being my favourite genre. Nevertheless, that doesn’t mean I’m not excited for fans of Saw.

Ali Johnson, Dan Petronijevic, Edie Inksetter, Leila Leigh, Max Minghella, Christopher Tai, John Tokatlidis, Genelle Williams, and Leonidas Castrounis also star.

Spiral Release Dates: May 14th, 2021 (US); May 21st, 2021 (UK)…

LOCKED IN (2021): New Trailer Starring Mena Suvari, Jasper Polish, Jeff Fahey, Costas Mandylor…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of  Locked In (2021).

New crime/thriller Locked In has Mena Suvari as a single mother who must protect her daughter and herself after a heist at a high-tech storage facility goes wrong.

Written/directed by Carlos V. Gutierrez; additional key cast includes Jeff Fahey, Jasper Polish and Costas Mandylor.

I’ve never entered a storage facility before, but every time I walk past one, thoughts of how easy it might be to get lost in there, and how creepy it likely feels cross my mind,

I want this to be one of those movies that’s highly engaging and thrilling, even though most of the action takes place in one building.

Bruno Bichir, Manny Perez, Natalie Smith, James Biberi and Joanne Lamstein also star.

Locked In Release Dates: May 7th, 2021 (US)…

THE IRREGULARS (2021): New Trailer Starring Thaddea Graham, Darci Shaw, Jojo Macari…

The Irregulars (2021), Thaddea Graham, Netflix
The Irregulars (2021), Thaddea Graham, Netflix

Netflix’s latest crime/drama/mystery The Irregulars, offers a twist on the classic Sherlock Holmes story. This time, the focus is on a group of misfits who investigate a series of supernatural crimes in Victorian London for Mr Holmes and Dr Watson.

Created by Tom Bidwell; some of the key cast includes Thaddea Graham, Darci Shaw and Jojo Macari.

Writer Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes is quite the gift that keeps on giving, no? Not only has the great Holmes been portrayed by the likes Robert Downey Jr, Benedict Cumberbatch and more. But 2019 also delivered a movie about the detective’s teenage sister, Enola Holmes. And now this.

I anticipate fun ahead with this one. Especially if, like myself, you’re quite partial to a good mystery.

Ansu Kabia, McKell David, Sheila Atim, Harrison Osterfield, Clarke Peters, Royce Pierreson, Grant Crookes, Henry Lloyd-Hughes, Manoj Anand, Charles Armstrong and Anthony Barclay also star.

The Irregulars Release Dates: March 26th, 2021 (US & UK)…

ARMY OF THE DEAD (2021): New Trailer Starring Dave Bautista, Garret Dillahunt, Ella Purnell, Ana de la Reguera…

Directed and co-written by Zack Snyder, Army of the Dead is a new action/crime/horror film about a zombie outbreak in Las Vegas.

In the midst of it all, a group of mercenaries decide to take the ultimate gamble and venture into the quarantine zone to pull off the greatest heist ever attempted.

Garret Dillahunt, Dave Bautista, Ella Purnell and Ana de la Reguera star.

I love the synopsis of the movie, in part because it evokes fond memories of watching the fun heist movie Ocean’s Eleven (2001). And my favourite zombie film, Train to Busan (2016).

Hopefully this will be the perfect mix of both genres.

Nora Arnezeder, Samantha Win, Matthias Schweighöfer, Lyon Beckwith, Theo Rossi, Tig Notaro, Michael Cassidy, Omari Hardwick, Lora Martinez-Cunningham and Raúl Castillo also star.

Army of the Dead Release Dates: May 21st, 2021 (US)…
