BABYLON (2022): New Trailer Starring Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Samara Weaving, Tobey Mcquire, Olivia Wilde…

Lal La land (2016) and Whiplash (2014) director Damien Chazelle’s latest film is set in early Hollywood and stars Brad Pitt, Margot Robbie, Samara Weaving, Tobey Mcquire and Olivia Wilde.

Babylon is a historical comedy/drama that follows the rise and fall of multiple characters, as a result of outsized ambition and outrageous excess.

Even though this trailer was released back in September 2022, I hadn’t featured it sooner because it reminded me a little too much of Hail, Caesar!, a 2015 movie also set during the earlier Hollywood years. And as excited as I was for the film, it turned out to be quite a major disappointment.

Babylon‘s filmmaking team is what has me most interested; more so than the themes. And now that September is long gone, I’ve gotten over the Hail, Caesar! issue a little more, which means I’ll probably give Babylon a fair chance.

How about you? What are your thoughts on this trailer? Are you also curious about how Pitt’s character compares to his turn as the undeniably cool Cliff Booth in Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood?

Jean Smart, Eric Roberts, Lukas Haas, Jeff Garlin, Spike Jonze, Phoebe Tonkin, Katherine Waterston, Max Minghella, Todd Giebenhain, Chloe Fineman, Jennifer Grant, Rhian Rees and Flea also star.

Babylon Release Dates: December 23rd, 2022 (US); January 20th, 2022 (UK)…

LA LA LAND (2016): Good Film, Better For Fans Of Musicals

La La Land (2016), Emma Stone
La La Land (2016), Emma Stone

Starring Emma Stone, Ryan Gosling, John Legend and J.K. Simmons, La La Land is the love story of a jazz pianist and an aspiring Hollywood actress. It is a well told story that features great dramatic performances, good dialogue, beautiful cinematography, music and costume; I particularly love ‘that yellow dress’.

Written and directed by Damien Chazelle of Whiplash (2014), La La Land is is a good movie that’s understandably most loved by fans of musicals. I must confess that generally speaking, I’m not into musicals. Call it a consequence of my impatient nature but most of the time, I’d much rather words were spoken rather than sang. The pleasing rhythm of well written dialogue will always be preferred by me, over the sounds of what is arguably often mediocre singing where musicals are concerned. And if the singing isn’t mediocre, I find the voices to be regularly, quite tedious.

In La La Land, there’s just no faulting the dramatic performances. The cast are a trust worthy bunch acting-wise. As for when it came to Gosling and Stone flexing their vocal chords in the name of song, there are definitely some moments of questionable vocal ability.

I enjoyed the opening song at the start of La La Land, the big ‘audition number’ that Stone sings towards the end and the instrumental as the closing credits began. The rest of the music I honestly could have done without.

Watch La La Land for all the reasons it won all those Oscars and because it genuinely isn’t a bad film. If Chazelle’s Whiplash managed to convince you that jazz isn’t all bad, La La Land is additional material to strengthen his argument.

LA LA LAND (2016): New From Ryan Gosling, Emma Stone, John Legend and J.K. Simmons

When I realised that La La Land, the new movie starring Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone  was written and directed by the same person (Damien Chazelle) who brought us 2014’s Oscar winning movie, Whiplash, I knew something worthy was coming.

The premise of the film is simple; a jazz pianist falls in love with an aspiring actress in Los Angeles (a.k.a. La La Land)…

On account of director Chazelle’s musical backdround, it’s unsurprising that music is once again a key theme in one of his movies. If somehow you haven’t already seen Whiplashdo so at once!

The La La Land trailer peaks my interest only slightly at this point. It’s probably something to do with the edit and what I imagine is my slight disinterest in watching Stone and Gosling as a couple once more. I first saw them cast opposite each other romantically in  Crazy Stupid Love (2011). My fingers are crossed that I end up enjoying La la Land more than I anticipate. Especially considering my natural aversion to musicals.

John Legend, J.K. Simmons, Finn Wittrock, Rosemarie DeWitt and Sonoya Mizuno also star.

WHIPLASH (2014): Does Far More Than Help You Reconsider Jazz

Whiplash (2014), Miles Teller
Whiplash (2014), Miles Teller

Coaxing out such stellar performances from his lead Actors, writer/ director, Damien Chazelle’s Whiplash tells the story of a young gifted drummer (Miles Teller) on his journey to greatness.

Shot in just 19 days, Whiplash is brilliantly edited and focuses on the relationship between Teller’s musician and his hugely demanding instructor (J.K.Simmons).

Along with Teller’s finely realised portrayal, Simmons is an actor who had mainly been known to me for his comedic work in the great movie, I Love You Man (2009) and he does a great job as the cold and twisted instructor, Fletcher. So much so that he was blessed with the Best Supporting Actor Oscar.

Coming from a background in jazz drumming himself, Chazelle gives us a memorable film with a fantastic ending you really won’t want to miss. Thanks to Whiplash, I officially have an even greater respect for the creative talents of the one, Miles Teller and an increase in my appreciation of jazz. I said it!
