DEAN (2017): The Thing I Liked…

Dean, a drama / comedy about loss, grief and the redemptive power of love is a movie that fell a tad short of my expectations. I was initially drawn to it, in part because of the humour in the trailer but I found the film to be more dramatic than funny.

The beginning proved quite slow moving and by the halfway point, I cared more about what happened to the supporting characters than I did about the main character played by Demetri Martin. I also found the music that seemed to literally communicate characters’ feelings a tad annoying.

The illustrations that conveyed Dean’s emotions were a nice touch but even with them included, it wasn’t really until the plane scene towards the end that something somewhat memorable happened. Thanks in part to the way the incessant talker character was played.

As for Reid Scott’s role, he did well, but of course his Dan Egan character on HBO’s VEEP is far superior. What did the film really have to say about loss, grief and redemption? Exactly what you think it did.

Watch this if you absolutely must. I was about to add ‘You’re welcome.’ But that’s definitely too much, isn’t it? It’s too much. I’ll stop.

Happy Film Loving
