TO ALL THE BOYS – ALWAYS AND FOREVER (2021): The Things I Liked…

I remember being pleasantly surprised by To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, back in 2018; the story of the romantic life of two high school students, Lara Jean (Lana Condor) and Peter (Noah Centineo).

Then came To All the Boys – P.S. I Still Love You (2020), a film I concluded was okay compared to the first. Having now watched To All the Boys – Always and Forever, the final instalment, I can say that minus one or two minor niggles, director Michael Fimognari’s film is close to as satisfying as high school romance stories get. Especially for girls who picture themselves in Lara Jean’s position.

It certainly helps that Peter is quite decent, somewhat mature, and the story feels generally quite grounded in the reality of what life is like for high schoolers in similar predicaments. I enjoyed letting To All the Boys – Always and Forever take me back to the romantic ups and downs of high school life and remembering just how absorbing my high school romances were.

Other highlights include the general look and feel of the visuals, including the colours, illustrations, plus a perfectly fitting, sometimes rebellious soundtrack.

The only parts that had me raising an eyebrow or two involve the situation with the pink sofa on the New York subway. Particularly the expectation that I’m supposed to believe they fully carried it there. There’s also the fact that Peter’s father looks very unlike him and some of his dialogue left me wanting.

I say watch To All the Boys – Always and Forever if you enjoyed the first two movies. The story is wrapped up rather well.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of  To all the Boys – Always and Forever (2021).

In To All the Boys – Always and Forever, Noah Centineo and Lana Condor are back for the third and final story of Lara and Peter.

Continuing their romantic life, we’ll get to see both of them grow up while facing good and hard times with friends and family.

Directed by Michael Fimognari; additional key cast includes Janel Parrish, Madeleine Arthur, Lisa Durupt, Sarayu Blue.

The first instalment was a good teen movie. The second was OK. My fingers are crossed that this one will be a worthy finale.

Momona Tamada, Emilija Baranac, Kayla Deorksen and C. Ernst Harthand also star.

TO ALL THE BOYS I’VE LOVED BEFORE (2018): The Things I Liked…

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before (2018), Lana Condor

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before, the story of a teenage girl whose secret love letters to five crushes end up being delivered is not a bad movie.

Though Love Simon (2018) is still very much my favourite high school movie in a while, I liked how good director Susan Johnson’s film was at taking me back to that time when I too was a high schooler with an all consuming crush.

Besides the gift of reminiscing, I enjoyed seeing John Corbett in his role as a father to three daughters. I also definitely liked the look and design of the teenage protagonist’s bedroom – even though it’s not how I’d like my teenage room to look.

Overall, I’d say that To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is an adequately entertaining movie that felt very teenage. This is probably why my non-teenage self found some of the mistakes the teenagers in the movie made, quite frustrating to watch.

Lead by Lana Condor, the entire cast did a good job and I’m not that mad at the end result.

You’ll likely guess how things will play out soon after the film starts but I say watch it anyway. Especially if reminiscing about high school won’t hurt. And definitely watch it if you’re in high school. I’d probably have loved it more if I’d been in high school when this movie came out.

To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before is a new drama / romance that tells the story of  teenage girl whose secret love letters are exposed.

Based on the novel by Jenny Han; Lana Condor, John Corbett, Noah Centineo and Emilija Baranac star…

As I watched this trailer, I thought ‘here we go, just the same old teen story…’ But then the reason the protagonist faints at the beginning is revealed and I decide that I could probably dedicate some time to this movie. Especially since – luckily for me, my high school crush was never so cruel as to tell me that nothing would ever happen between us.

I’m going to let this movie take me back to my early teenage years as I reminisce about  the boy who made school an event I was always more than happy to wake up for.
