ROSALINE (2022): The Things I Liked…

One of the best things about streaming services is that when you encounter a portion of a film/show that you’re disinterested in, you can skip right ahead to the parts that fully engage you.

I generally don’t fast-forward most movies, but I did at least once with Rosaline, the new Karen Maine-directed comedy/romance, which functions as a reimagining of Romeo and Juliet.

In Maine’s story, this time, as you may have guessed, the protagonist is not Romeo but instead Rosaline, Romeo’s love interest before his beloved Juliet.

Starring Kaitlyn Dever, Bradley Whitford, Isabela Merced, Minnie Driver, Sean Teale and Kyle Allen, Rosaline is an easy-viewing experience that often serves up giggles and smiles for its audience. Charming, satisfying and creatively reimagined are some words that fit.

It would have been better if I never had to skip forward that one time as Rosaline played. Still, I’m happy to have been amused. And with that, I say, watch Rosaline if you’re especially curious to see a re-write of one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved plays.

BOOKSMART (2019): The Things I Liked…

Booksmart (2019), Beanie Feldstein
Booksmart (2019), Beanie Feldstein

Olivia Wilde’s directorial debut Booksmart is a comedy set in high school, and one that focuses on two A students who spent so much time working hard that they forgot to party. Now that it’s the last night before graduation, they set about making up for precious lost time.

Starring Kaitlyn Devers, Beanie Feldstein, Jason Sudeikis and Noah Galvin, I think everyone generally performed well and Booksmart is a movie with some parts I really enjoyed. To my surprise though, more so than the comedy focused scenes between Feldstein and Dever, the moments that really commanded my attention were actually the more emotional / dramatic scenes. Scenes like the argument towards the end and the very last scene in the movie.

The funny moments that stood out most include all the ones that featured Sudeikis – even though he’s hardly in it. I especially appreciated the moment the Cardi B. reference happened. There’s also Galvin’s generally great comic timing, delivery and his potentially nightmare inducing rendition of Alanis Morrisette’s classic ‘You Oughtta Know.

The music, cool shooting and editing style, particularly the way the high school experience is captured is certainly memorable.

As for what I loved less about Booksmart, that would be the unfortunate slight cringe factor that stemmed from some scenes between Feldstein and Dever going on too long or coming across as too high energy and overdone.

I say see it for yourself if you’re curious. It’s certainly highly hyped but there is some cleverness within.

BOOKSMART (2019): New trailer From Kaitlyn Dever, Molly Gordon, Jason Sudeikis, Beanie Feldstein …

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Booksmart (2019)

Directed by Olivia Wilde, Booksmart is a new comedy starring Kaitlyn Dever, Molly Gordon, Beanie Feldstein and Jason Sudeikis.

Feldstein and Dever play two academic superstars determined not to fall short of their peers as they try to cram four years worth of fun into a single night.

I’m interested because I like Wilde and I’ve never seen anyone quite so creatively fashion a mask using the hair on their head as is the case at 1:59 into this trailer.

Billie Lourd, Lisa Kudrow, Skyler Gisondo, Will Forte, Diana Silvers, Jessica Williams, Eduardo Franco and Michael Patrick O’Brien also star.

Booksmart Release Dates: May 24th, 2019 (US); May 27th, 2019 (UK)…
