CHEVALIER (2022): New Trailer Starring Kelvin Harrison Jr., Samara Weaving, Minnie Driver, Lucy Boynton…

Kelvin Harrison Jr., Samara Weaving, Lucy Boynton and Minnie Driver are the stars of new biographical drama, Chevalier. A Stephen Williams-directed story about the illegitimate son of a slave and a plantation owner who rises to unexpected heights in French society as a composer.

The composer is Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges.

At least two audible yelps of excitement escaped my lips as I watched this trailer. And the reasons are as follows. I am a bigger fan of Kelvin Harrison Jr. than I realised. Particularly after his work in Waves (2019). Secondly, this clever trailer edit grabbed my attention, refused to let go, and I’m not mad about it. Thirdly, hello, compelling true story about an underdog making all his doubters choke almost violently on their words. (admittedly, one of my favourite things in any story). There’s also the charismatic Samara Weaving.

And last but in no way least, the music, of course, the music. I can’t wait to see all the performances. Especially the musical face-off that happens at 0:35 seconds into the trailer.

Marton Csokas, Sian Clifford, Alec Newman, Alex Fitzalan, Ronke Adekoluejo, Jessica Boone, Jim High, Ben Bradshaw and Sam Barlien also star.

Chevalier Release Dates: AprIl 7th, 2023 (US)…

ROSALINE (2022): The Things I Liked…

One of the best things about streaming services is that when you encounter a portion of a film/show that you’re disinterested in, you can skip right ahead to the parts that fully engage you.

I generally don’t fast-forward most movies, but I did at least once with Rosaline, the new Karen Maine-directed comedy/romance, which functions as a reimagining of Romeo and Juliet.

In Maine’s story, this time, as you may have guessed, the protagonist is not Romeo but instead Rosaline, Romeo’s love interest before his beloved Juliet.

Starring Kaitlyn Dever, Bradley Whitford, Isabela Merced, Minnie Driver, Sean Teale and Kyle Allen, Rosaline is an easy-viewing experience that often serves up giggles and smiles for its audience. Charming, satisfying and creatively reimagined are some words that fit.

It would have been better if I never had to skip forward that one time as Rosaline played. Still, I’m happy to have been amused. And with that, I say, watch Rosaline if you’re especially curious to see a re-write of one of William Shakespeare’s most beloved plays.

Spinning Man (2018), Guy Pearce
Spinning Man (2018), Guy Pearce

A young woman is found murdered and the prime suspect is a ‘happily married’ professor with a reputation.

Directed by Simon Kaijser, the key characters are played by Guy Pearce, Odeya Rush, Minnie Driver and Pierce Brosnan…

Pearce always plays interesting characters; that’s the reason I’ll be watching this hopefully satisfying thriller.

Sterling Beaumon, Alexandra Shipp, Sean Blakemore, Clark Gregg and Jamie Kennedy also star.

THE WILDE WEDDING (2017): New Trailer From Glenn Close, Patrick Stewart, John Malkovich, Minnie Driver…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The Wilde Wedding (2017).

From writer/director Damian Harris, The Wilde Wedding is a new comedy about a retired actress who gets married for the fourth time, to a renowned english writer.

Glenn Close, Patrick Stewart, John Malkovich and Minnie Driver are among the key cast.

First of all, to anyone who didn’t recognise Sir Patrick Stewart with hair, what kind of movie fan are you?

All jokes aside, I’ll be watching because the cast is great. There’s also the fact that this trailer looks good and reminds me so much of one of my favourites, It’s Complicated (2009).

Yael Stone, Peter Facinelli, Grace Van Patten and Noah Emmerich also make an appearance.

BEYOND THE LIGHTS (2014): Whatever’s In Your Heart, Do That

Beyond The Lights (2014), Gugu Mbartha-Raw

Firstly, I love the name of the female star of the Gina Prince-Bythewood directed Beyond The Lights. If you didn’t already know, It’s British actress Gugu Mbartha-Raw.

The pressures of fame and success as a female in the music business is an important aspect of this carefully handled story – which also stars Minnie Driver, Nate Parker and Danny Glover.

As I watched, I found myself reminded of all the times that famous and wise musicians have emphasised the importance of surrounding oneself with ‘the right people’ –  people who tell you the truth and those who absolutely have your best interests at heart.

There’s also a great message about personal truth and how it can be difficult to accept, but more often than not, when it finally is, therein lies the beginning of a journey toward one’s own version of happiness.

Sometimes being selfish is the only way. Especially since it’s from love of self and learning of / knowing one’s value that you have the strength to do what deep down you know you must.

Watch it because you’re curious about what the world of such a story can be like and because you want to know if and how the protagonist comes to fair under the pressures of both fame and her own personal truth.

Happy Beyond The Lights 🙂
