Breaking A Monster is a new Luke Meyer-directed documentary about the year the heavy metal band Unlocking The Truth became real rock stars.
The story is a special one for reasons including the fact that the band is comprised of three thirteen year old boys from Brooklyn, New York – Alec Atkins, Malcolm Brickhouse and Jarad Dawkins.
I’m curious because of how generally unexpected it is. I’m also inspired by it because it’s an example of people, in this case 13 year old boys visualising what they want, working hard regardless of all the people that may not have believed, making their dreams come true and – weakening long standing stereotypes as they do it.
I’m not much of a heavy metal fan myself, which is unsurprising, I’m sure. The closest I’ve come to giving the genre a real chance would be Metallica’s I Disappear, a song I came across thanks to the Mission: Impossible 2 (2000) soundtrack. I think it’s a good song even though many serious Metallica fans would very strongly disagree.
