The awaited trailer for Disney’s live-action remake of Moana (2016) has landed, and it stars Dwayne Johnson, Catherine Laga’aia and John Tui, while Thomas Kail directs.
I enjoyed Moana (2016), I didn’t get around to Moana 2 (2024), but this live-ation remake of the original movie? It feels super unnecessary.
I’ve been trying to imagine who this appeals to the most. The answer is clearly not me. Perhaps it’s the die-hard fans for whom there’s no such thing as too much Moana.
There simply isn’t an element of this remake that appeals to me in a major way. Whereas, with Disney’s 2015 live-action Cinderella film, it had been a while since a Disney Cinderella movie, and the filmmaking team couldn’t have appealed to me more, as per my response to the excellent trailer.
Are you looking forward to Moana 2026? I’m guessing that there has to be someone who’s super excited.
Frankie Adams and Rena Owen also star.
Moana Release Dates: July 10th, 2026 (US & UK)…
Happy Film Loving,

I agree. This remake does not need to exist 10 years after the original.
Money has a way of convincing people the the worst ideas are worth it sometimes. Perhaps we’ll all be surprised.
I’m looking at this as an expensive experiment. Summer will tell us the results.
Truth!
Exactly, no legitimate reason for this remake. I understand the marketing push behind it because Lilo and Stitch did so well and this one has similar spirit of family and indigenous people. The difference is Moana is not that old for anyone to get nostalgic about.
Perhaps the only reason that makes sense is the fact that The Rock is not getting any younger and this was his last chance to play his character that is arguably the most popular across the board.
Good points, Uri. One can only hope that what feels like a financial gamble works out for Disney. I look forward to how enthused the superfans will be post-viewing.
