Resident Evil, the latest action/horror/sci-fi film from Weapons (2025) director Zach Cregger, has Austin Abrams as a courier tasked with delivering a package to a remote hospital.
While in the midst, he finds himself in an outbreak, and so begins the fight through hordes of mutated creatures to survive.
I’ve been a fan of Abrams ever since Brad’s Status (2017), and he most recently stood out in Wolfs (2004). This, and how good the above trailer looks, could just be strong enough reasons to overpower my tendency to avoid 99.99% of horror films.
What I’m curious about is whether this trailer has fans of the Resident Evil games excited or apprehensive. After all, it does look quite different from the Mila Jovovich era.

Just got a flashback of Abrams jumping over the moving car in Wolfs.
Yes! That’s a memorable scene. I wonder how they shot that.
I’m wondering myself where this fits in the Resident Evil timeline. I watched the Netflix show which was also a bit different from everything else that came before.
This trailer gave me a bit of Carpenter’s The Thing vibe. Many shots shown are director’s signature, which should be good. Also it looks like it’s mainly a one man show reminiscent of the Quiet Place.
The fact that all previous directors seem to have taken different approaches to the Resident Evil story makes things interesting for film fans. But perhaps, I’d guess less so for fans of the games.
I’m kind of torn on this one. Although entertaining, the Milla Jovovich franchise wasn’t faithful to the games in the beginning, but slowly introduced game characters in the sequels. Welcome to Raccoon City is faithful to the games, but it was just as bad and less entertaining. This looks like it isn’t faithful the games in terms of characters, but the zombies are intact. Plus Zach Cregger has been doing very well with horror lately, so I’ll give it a chance.
Based on all you’ve mentioned, giving this a chance sounds right to me. It’s pretty exciting to be the main, if not the only human character, in a promising-looking movie. I have a feeling Abrams will do great.
I see people complaining because this one will be a original story with no iconic character like Jill or Leon. In my opinion it is the right choice, doing something original from the point of view of a normal person trying to survive. When they tried to be “faithfull” to the plot, they did a lot of mistakes.
Interesting point. I get why the fans of the games would be disappointed. But as someone who only knows the Resident Evil games by name and has never seen the movies either, all I really care about is a well-executed film. I hope fans of the games will be pleasantly surprised by the entertainment value, even though this version isn’t fully true to the games.
