Ryan Reynolds, Kenneth Branagh and David Morse star in Mayday, a John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein-directed action/comedy/adventure.
It’s a story about a reconnaissance mission over Soviet territory that goes wrong, leading to a fight to survive Russian wilderness while evading capture or rescue.
I didn’t see the Branagh and Reynolds pairing coming, and this mostly has me wanting to rewatch The Hitman’s Bodyguard (2017).
Right now, I want to categorise this as ‘easy viewing’; Hopefully the kind I’ll enjoy more than I did Red Notice (2021).
What’s your level of enthusiasm?
Wendy Crewson, Maria Bakalova, Louis Cancelmi, Clark Johnson, Donald Sales, Alex Mallari Jr., Marcin Dorocinski, Aleksandra Kimaeva, Sophie-Thérèse Stone-Richards and Jacob Hanlon also star.
Mayday Release Dates: September 4th, 2026 (US & UK)…

Ambivalent is the best word I can think of right now.
Fully understandable, Lisa. Something about it isn’t quite sticking. Perhaps we’ll end up pleasantly surprised. 🤓
🙂 Cheers!
This one I am on the fence with. I like the stars well enough, but I’m not drawn to the story. I may give Mayday its day.
I hear you, Bruce. The recipe just isn’t screaming guaranteed hit right now.
The story appears quite simple. I wonder if it will be enough.
Not always, but sometimes simple works. It would be great to be wrong about this, as always.
Wow, this does look intense, but Reynolds might make it tolerable!
I’m hoping you’re right, since he does have a specific set of skills.🤓
I’ll be honest. I would dismiss it if it wasn’t for Branagh. It’s unusual pairing and it’s rather a cash grab (by him) or there’s something really fun about it that convinced him to do it. Because it was a very smart move from marketing perspective since the world is tired of Reynolds one trick pony approach that works absolutely perfect for Deadpool, but got overshadowed by his behind the scenes shenanigans with his wife.
I used to love his comedic style, but when it became evident how egocentric he is in real life it rubbed me the wrong way. I’m not in love with Tom Cruise’s price life either, but I can separate his private and movie persona simply because he’s a professional filmmaker to the core and he respects coworkers around him. He can be reportedly overbearing, but it’s always about making the movie better. While Reynolds is all about himself, using others to make himself look better.
Because of all that I’m here for Branagh, which does appear like a perfect antidote to Reynolds in this movie.

I hate when autocorrect presumes what words I’m trying to use 🫠
Auto-correct is like AI in that way. Super helpful when it works, but a near ‘disaster’ when it fails us. 😁 I still understood everything; such is the nature of our brains to fill in the gaps. 🤓
I do enjoy the word ‘shenanigans.’ And you’ve used it perfectly here. 🤓 It will take some doing for Reynolds to regain what he’s lost. I’m curious about Branagh too. It seems he really enjoys putting on a Russian accent. i think he had it for Tenet (2020) as well.
