MAGNOLIA (1999): Chaos Masterfully Organised

Magnolia (1999), Philip Seymour Hoffman

Paul Thomas Anderson’s Magnolia is the reason the name ‘Denise’ will never be the same for me again. It’s all thanks to a memorable line delivered by Tom Cruise as the infamous misogynist, Frank T.J. Mackey.

The delivery of the ‘Denise, Denise, Denise the piece‘ line may be somewhat comical, but the comedy of it is in no way the only thing that stays with you once the film ends.

Cruise’s performance was so good that it resulted in a Best Supporting Actor Golden Globe win. Add Philip Seymour Hoffman, William H. Macy, plus so many other great talents to the cast list of this very well-written piece, and we have a winner in more ways than one.

Magnolia is the first film that really made me pay attention to all the times in the future when the highly skilled Julianne Moore is listed as a cast member. There are plenty of great scenes to enjoy. I particularly love the drugstore scene from which the above still was captured. So good!

Anderson’s movie is very well-executed and focuses on several relatable life themes, including one that reveals what can happen in adulthood when a young person’s support system fails them badly.

The theme that resonated most with me is regret. An important topic so expertly explored that Magnolia is a brilliant reminder for me to do all that I can to avoid regret.

I recommend making time for this affecting work of narrative artistry, so you’ll see precisely why it’s been described as epic.

AMERICAN BEAUTY (1999): Forever Brilliant

For every film lover, there are at least one or two, perhaps even three films that come immediately to mind whenever they‘re asked that inevitable question. ‘What’s your favourite film?’

My answer always includes, without hesitation, director Sam Mendes’ 1999 Oscar-winning film debut, American Beauty.

Even now, I’m still yet to watch another film more perfect. Such a beautifully crafted story with excellent dialogue, symbolism and a healthy dose of truth and black humour.

It’s a brilliant commentary on suburbia and life in the classic American small town. American Beauty offers plenty of potentially useful information about the human condition.

There’s a strong theme on the difference between what people work hard to project versus the actual truth. The most interesting version of this is the exterior proclamations of the person who internally actually hates themselves.

As a result of this film, Annette Bening, Kevin Spacey, Chris Cooper, Writer Alan Ball, Director Sam Mendes and more, including the great Cinematographer Conrad L. Hall are forever in my mind, synonymous with brilliance.

I know one person who called American Beauty boring. Not quite sure what to say to that. Except maybe that it’s unlikely they actually truly watched it.

Have you seen American Beauty. I bet it made you appreciate the colour more than you did before.

CINDERELLA (2015): Cate Blanchett Is Who…?

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Cinderella (2015).

Cinderella is arguably one of the best fairy tales out there. Not because of the famous romance, in my opinion. But rather, thanks to the story of triumph over the unkind and cruel. Particularly when a person triumphs without sacrificing their character and principles.

I’ve watched the below trailer for director Kenneth Branagh’s live-action Cinderella remake a very high number of times, and the great music is certainly a huge part of the reason why.

Bring on March 2015, I say!!

Additional key cast includes Lily James, Richard Madden, Helena Bonham Carter, Hayley Atwell, Nonso Anozie, Stellan Skarsgård, Sophie McShera, Holliday Grainger, Derek Jacobi and Ben Chaplin.

Annette Bening, Al Pacino, Christopher Plummer, Bobby Cannavale… It’s hard not to adore all of them – and unsurprisingly, they star in some of the best films ever made.

Today, however, it’s all about Danny Collins (2015). And as per the following trailer, the signs for a good experience are good.

SIX DANCE LESSONS IN SIX WEEKS (2014): Guaranteed Fun. I Can Tell…

Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks looks like the kind of light and fun Sunday film experience I’ll want any day now.

A trailer filled with comedy, music, dancing, Cheyenne Jackson and the likeable Gena Rowlands, a.k.a. the older version of Allie from The Notebook (2004), I know I’ll be watching with high hopes.

It certainly helps that the film is based on a successful play.

Will you be tuning in to this one?

Six Dance Lessons in Six Weeks Release Dates: December 12th, 2014 (US)…
