A HOUSE OF DYNAMITE (2025): The Things I Liked…

I had ideas of how A House of Dynamite, Netflix’s latest Kathryn Bigelow-directed drama/thriller, would be. Especially considering a wonderful cast that includes Idris Elba, Greta Lee, and Rebecca Ferguson.

The compelling premise, one about several White House staffers dealing with an impending missile strike on the United States, is well teased in the trailers. Once the film started, along with the filming style and notable acting, the musical score stood out for expertly creating a constant sense of unease.

Bigelow’s film is split into three distinct parts. For me, part one is where the good news lives in terms of my experience of the film. It’s where we’re introduced to the high-pressure world of people bearing the weight of keeping America safe, should the incoming missile do its worst. These people are also processing the idea that within thirty minutes, they, along with many they love, and innocent civilians could very well cease to exist. These tension-filled scenes are captured in an engaging way.

Things went downhill for me when it became clear that parts two and three were capturing the very same events, covering the same period of time, but from the vantage point of different White House staff departments. Unfortunately, having to sit through a retelling of the same event wasn’t delivered in a way that proved adequately engaging for me. Essentially, I found myself feeling short-changed due to the repetition.

If you’re curious, give A House of Dynamite a chance. You may find parts two and three more engaging than I did.

HAMNET (2026): New Trailer From Paul Mescal, Joe Alyn, Jessie Buckley…

Hamnet (2025), Paul Mescal Focus Features

Directed and co-written by Chloé Zhao, Hamnet is the story of the events in the life of highly regarded English playwright, William Shakespeare; a time that inspired his timeless masterpiece, Hamlet.

Paul Mescal, Jessie Buckley, Zac Wishart and Joe Alwyn star.

An emotional slog is what this looks like. Still, I’m interested to see a promising dramatisation of part of Shakespeare’s personal story. One that’s produced by Sam Mendes and Steven Spielberg, no less.

I’m going to re-familiarise myself with Hamlet, before watching this. Until then, a thought:

‘Art, beautiful art, that wondrous gift with the glorious power to help us heal in countless ways.’

Will you be watching?

James Lintern, James Lintern, Joe Alwyn, Justine Mitchell, Eva Wishart, Emily Watson, David Wilmot, Dainton AndersonLouisa Harland, Smylie Bradwell and Faith Delaney also star.

Hamnet Release Dates: December 12th 2025 (US); January 9th, 2026

MERCY (2026) New Trailer Starring Chris Pratt, Rebecca Ferguson, Annabelle Wallis, Kenneth Choi…

Mercy (2026): Chris Pratt, Amazon MGM Studios
Mercy (2026): Chris Pratt, Amazon MGM Studios

New sci-fi/crime/thriller Mercy has Chris Pratt playing a detective whose fate is to be determined by the AI (Rebecca Ferguson) he championed, after he’s accused of murdering his wife.

Annabelle Wallis, Kenneth Choi and Noah Fearnley are among the key cast, while Timur Bekmambetov directs.

I want this to be great, of course. But I don’t yet have the feeling it will be.

Still, I remain curious and will no doubt be very happy and pleasantly surprised if the quality of this film exceeds that of Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg’s Minority Report (2002), which I need to rewatch forthwith.

I suspect that what may be most impressive is what the film shows us about the level to which the American public is under surveillance. Additionally, wouldn’t it be quite the twist if Pratt’s character is actually guilty?

What are your thoughts, dear reader?

Kylie Rogers, Chris Sullivan, Kali Reis, Rafi Gavron, Jeff Pierre, Philicia Saunders, Renata Ribeiro and Jamie McBride also star.

Mercy Release Dates: January 23rd, 2026 (US & UK)…

THE SECRET AGENT (2025): New Trailer Starring Wagner Moura, Maria Fernanda Cândido, Gabriel Leone…

The Secret Agent (2025), Wagner Moura, NEON

In search of refuge and peace, a technology expert returns to Recife, Brazil, his hometown, after fleeing a mysterious past. Only, peace and refuge aren’t quite what he finds in the city.

Set in 1977 and starring Wagner Moura, and directed by Kleber Mendonça Filho, additional key cast for The Secret Agent includes Maria Fernanda Cândido and Gabriel Leone.

I love the look and feel of this trailer. It reminds me of The Penguin Lessons (2024), which is also set in South America, in the mid-to-late 1970s. I want to experience something like the vibe of that again.

Are you also interested in ‘travelling’ to Recife, Brazil, for just two hours and thirty-eight minutes?

Alice Carvalho, Udo Kier, Isabél Zuaa and Hermila Guedes also star.

The Secret Agent Release Dates: November 26th, 2025 (US)…

DIE MY LOVE (2025): New Trailer from Jennifer Lawrence, Robert Pattinson, Sissy Spacek, Nick Nolte…

A remote, forgotten rural area is the setting of Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence’s latest comedy/drama/thriller. One about a mother’s struggle as she battles with psychosis.

Directed by Lynne Ramsay, LaKeith Stanfield, Nick Nolte, and Sissy Spacek are among the key cast.

Is it me, or does this trailer look like it shows a couple who are simply going through a generic tough time in their relationship, rather than a woman battling psychosis, as per the synopsis?

I’m interested, yet I’m also not in a rush to watch a relationship implode. Particularly since, so far, this seems like having to witness two people you know well, fight right in front of you.

Kennedy Calderwood, Gabrielle Rose, Zoe Cross and Kasmere Trice Stanfield also star.

Die My Love Release Dates: November 7th, 2025 (US); November 14th, 2025 (UK)…
