JUMANJI – WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE (2017): New Trailer From Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black, Karen Gillan…

Jumanji - Welcome To The Jungle (2017), Jack Black
Jumanji – Welcome To The Jungle (2017), Jack Black

Four teenagers are sucked into Jumanji‘s world, pitted against rhinos, black mambas and an endless variety of jungle traps and puzzles.

To return to planet Earth with their lives, they simply have to beat the game.

Directed by Jake Kasden, the stars of Jumanji – Welcome To The Jungle are Kevin Hart, Dwayne Johnson, Jack Black and Karen Gillan.

All I remember about Robin Williams’ Jumanji (1995) is that the characters sported khaki attire and ran away from stuff in the jungle. That’s it.

I’m glad that this trailer looks very promising. I’m most excited about the humour.

Nick Jonas, Missi Pyle and Rhys Darby also star.

Jumanji – Welcome To The Jungle  Release Dates: December 22nd, 2017 (US); December 29th, 2017 (UK)…

DANNY COLLINS (2015): A Memorable Bobby Cannavale Performance…

Danny Collins (2015), Bobby Cannavale, Al Pacino
Danny Collins (2015), Bobby Cannavale, Al Pacino

Danny Collins is a well told story of a less than ideal father/son relationship.

This is of course not all that the movie is about, but it’s the part that appealed to me the most. The film is moving, engaging and for want of a better phrase, a relaxing watch, thanks to the well-played characters and the healthy sprinklings of humour.

Danny Collins (2015), Bobby Cannavale, Jennifer Garner

Directed by Dan Fogelman of Crazy Stupid Love (2011)Bobby Cannavale’s part as the ‘abandoned son’ of a rockstar father is one of my favourites of his roles. Al Pacino is, as always very watchable,  as is Christopher Plummer and my dear ‘Lady Bening’. That’s Annette Bening, just to be clear. I also appreciated Jennifer Garner’s performance as the ‘very good wife.’

Since Pacino is a musician in this role, is the music any good..?, you may wonder. It’s by no means  a key reason for tuning in; though it isn’t completely terrible either.

Watch Danny Collins for the charm, humour, the story of a difficult father/son relationship and that of an ageing rocker on a mission to change his life for the better.

SPY (2015): It’s Good, People. It’s Good

Spy (2015), Melissa McCarthy
Spy (2015), Melissa McCarthy

Watching a spy movie and not having at least one thing about it reminding you of James Bond, the most famous spy of them all is near impossible.

Starring Melissa McCarthy, Jude Law and Jason Statham, the Paul Feig written/directed Spy is no exception. Unlike 007, however, Spy is a comedy/action film – and a rather good one at that.

An entertaining experience with a well-written story, fun dialogue and characters is how I describe Spy. The dynamic between Statham and McCarthy’s characters is a big highlight. Rose Byrne’s Rayna Boyanov is also another plus.

The other very reliable cast members include Allison Janney, Miranda Hart, Sam Richardson, Morena Baccarin and Bobby Cannavale.

Watch Spy because it’s good. I found Jude Law’s character a tad annoying at first, but it’s not so bad because the movie is a Melissa McCarthy vehicle, and Spy is definitely my favourite of her roles since Bridesmaids (2011), also directed by Paul Feig.

ADULT BEGINNERS (2014): I watched For The Comedy & Adult Sibling Relationship Dynamic

Adult Beginners (2014), Caleb/ Matthew Paddock, Nick Kroll, Rose Byrne
Adult Beginners (2014), Caleb/ Matthew Paddock, Nick Kroll, Rose Byrne

The Ross Katz directed and rather aptly named comedy/drama, Adult Beginners stars funny man Nick Kroll, Australian actor Rose Byrne and Bobby Cannavale.

If you’re open to a story about adult sibling relationships, starting again after losing everything, and getting your priorities in order, then Adult Beginners is interesting, though never too demanding.

The writing, the chemistry between the three leads and the way the camera captures the lives of the characters makes for very believable and real situations. As for how engaging it all is, the phrase ‘incredibly engrossing’ definitely doesn’t fit.

As for the comedy, most of it will make you smile and 2 or three times you may laugh out loud.

My interest in seeing Kroll in a somewhat serious role is why I watched. It also  helped that the always reliable Byrne and Cannavale were involved.

Joel McHale, Jane Krakowski, Caitlin Fitzgerald and Jason Mantzoukas also star.

Watch it if you’re curious.

BLUE JASMINE (2013): Officially My Favourite Woody Allen Film

Blue Jasmine (2013) Cate Blanchett
Blue Jasmine (2013) Cate Blanchett

Cate Blanchett is the star of what is now confirmed as my favourite Woody Allen film, Blue Jasmine. Her performance is fantastic; a brilliantly captivating portrayal of a desperate woman very much on the edge – if not hanging directly off of it.

As Jasmine continues to struggle, you’ll find yourself silently willing for her to make it through. Even though she’s not exactly the most likeable character. Nevertheless, her predicament isn’t especially uncommon and nobody wants to be in her situation.

It’s interesting how the screen is filled with what looks like the most glorious sunshine, when ‘bright and breezy’ is far from what’s going on in the lives of the characters in this very well-written and excellently paced film.

Watch Blue Jasmine because there is so much useful information about life and particularly, why it can be ill-advised to take a detour from your well thought out plans – and far too hastily.

Watch it to understand the reason Woody Allen is a film making hero for so many, and why Cate Blanchett is an absolute gift and arguably Australia’s equivalent of Meryl Streep.

Alec Baldwin, Bobby Cannavale and Sally Hawkins do a good job as  the well-chosen supporting cast.
