TOM CLANCY’S WITHOUT REMORSE (2021): The Things I Liked…

Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse (2021), Michael B. Jordan
Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse (2021), Michael B. Jordan

I had a feeling that Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse wouldn’t be completely terrible; simply because of some of the key talent involved.

The likes of Michael B. Jordan, Jamie Bell and Guy Pierce can often be relied upon to deliver watchable performances. Nevertheless, I can’t deny that director Stefano Sollima’s movie could do with some improvements..

I tuned in because the idea of Jordan as a Navy Seal on a vengeance mission was very appealing. And things became especially exciting and suspenseful after the thirty-minute mark, when Jordan’s John Clark was officially in badass mode.

These were the moments that Without Remorse proved most exciting for me; during the action/suspenseful sequences. I particularly enjoyed a scene inside a prison cell that’s very reminiscent of a key moment in Jack O’Connell and Ben Mendelsohn’s Starred Up (2014), a prison movie I highly recommend.

For seasoned film fanatics such as myself, though well executed in parts, I found a fair amount of what took place in Sollima’s Without Remorse relatively cliche’d. As impressive and fun to watch as the action scenes are, I wish that the whole movie felt more polished throughout. And certainly less like a Netflix/Amazon movie that didn’t quite meet its potential.

It is for these reasons, plus the moment or two of dialogue that didn’t sit so comfortably in my ears, and Jodie Turner Smith’s character seeming almost too young to be Clark’s superior that I have to say… only if you’re supercurious, then give Tom Clancy’s Without Remorse a chance.

ROCKETMAN (2019): The Things I Liked…

Rocketman (2019), Taron Egerton, Paramount Pictures
Rocketman (2019), Taron Egerton, Paramount Pictures

As confirmed in my recent review of The Greatest Showmanwhich I loved, I’m a fan of very few musicals. In fact, when a musical comes along that I’m curious enough about, I prepare myself mentally to have to sit through at least 3 musical numbers that I’d much rather skip or fast forward.

The good news about director Dexter Fletcher’s Rocketman, a biography of singer, songwriter, pianist and composer Elton John is that, even though I did definitely want to fast forward through two or three musical moments, there were at least three or more that I wish lasted for double the time.

Rocketman is for me, a notable achievement for all involved. The entire cast including Taron Egerton, Jamie Bell, Richard Madden and Bryce Dallas Howard all performed very well. A great relief since I actually wasn’t sure about Egerton when I heard he’d be playing John. My doubts were very much silenced soon after the film started. Not only did Egerton perform well musically, but some of my favourite scenes are when he’s portraying the singer at his most vulnerable. I actually had no idea that John’s story was quite so heartbreaking. I’m therefore really glad knowing how much happier his life appears to be now.

‘Rocketman’, ‘I’m Still Standing’ and ‘Your Song’ are my favourite of all the music performance scenes. I particularly love the scene that shows how ‘Your Song’ actually came to be; a scene as moving as the sentiment behind the song itself.

Egerton and Madden’s on screen chemistry and Bryce Dallas Howard’s performance won’t be forgotten by me anytime soon. I also won’t be forgetting the great friendship at the heart of Rocketman. Said friendship is perhaps the most beautiful part.

Watch it because it’s good.

Skin (2018), Jamie Bell, A24
Skin (2018), Jamie Bell, A24

From writer / director Guy Nattiv, Skin stars Jamie Bell, Danielle Macdonald, Mike Colter and Bill Camp in a biographical drama about Bryon Widner.

Widner is a young a young man who, with the help of a black activist and the woman he loves, he goes about turning his back on hatred, violence and the racist skinheads who raised him….

I like that I don’t already know how Widner’s story ends. I therefore look forward to finding out and comparing it to one of my favourites which also deals with a similar subject. Namely American History X (1998).

Vera Farmiga, Louisa Krause, Zoe Margaret Colletti, Kylie Rogers and Colbi Gannett also star.

Skin Release Dates: July 26th, 2019 (US)…

Directed by Paul McGuigan; set in 1979 and starring  Jamie Bell, Annette Bening plus Vanessa Redgrave, Film Stars Don’t Die In Liverpool is the story of a romance between a young actor and a Hollywood leading lady…

All I needed to be convinced to watch this is to see Annette Bening’s name and face. She is one of my ‘acting queens,’ thanks to her brilliant performance in a true favourite of mine,  American Beauty (1999).

6 Days (2017), Mark Strong

Jamie Bell, Abbie Cornish, Mark Strong and Tim Pigott-Smith are the stars of 6 Days, an action movie about the day armed gunmen stormed the Iranian Embassy in London in 1980 and took all inside hostage…

I’m completely new to this story rather important and interested to see a 1980s version of London.

FANTASTIC FOUR (2015): May The Movie Live Up To Its Name

Fantastic Four (2015), Miles Teller
Fantastic Four (2015), Miles Teller

How did I not feature the Fantastic Four trailer sooner? Slight super hero movie fatigue perhaps.

Whatever the answer, I’m doing it now because it is rather well done. My favourite moment being when Reed Richards/ Mr. Fantastic looks up and down to his right. Isn’t slow motion a beautiful thing?

With some of the most talented Actors of young Hollywood, Fantastic Four is an interesting super hero movie about, you guessed it, saving humanity. This new reboot is directed by Josh Trank and stars Miles Teller, Michael B Jordan, Kate Mara and Jamie Bell.

Trailer 1…

Final Trailer…

I’ll be ready come the August (2015) release date.

Happy Fantastic Four 🙂
