BASIC INSTINCT (1992): I Did My Best…

The truth is, I failed to get into Basic instinct. As I tried to watch it for the first time, a distinct feeling that the film was made for men and not me soon came over me. Of course, I’m not suggesting that one can’t enjoy a movie targeted at the opposite gender.

It’s just that, similarly to Breaking Bad, which, shockingly to many, I quit at episode five/six, the story didn’t sufficiently appeal to me. I couldn’t connect with it or the characters.

I tried my best to watch director Paul Verhoeven’s infamous detective drama/crime/thriller for more than 30 minutes, but I had to stop. It may be that I simply wasn’t in the right mood to take in a story about a violent police detective (Michael Douglas) who’s investigating a brutal murder that may involve a manipulative/seductive novelist (Sharon Stone).

Or, it could be that the film is ‘of its time.’ Therefore, my tastes, interests, and needs have evolved. Either way, I suspect it didn’t help that the detective movies I’d watched most recently turned out to be less than great. I.e. The Postcard Killings (2020) and Hangman (2017).

Still, one day I may re-attempt Verhoeven’s film. Do you think it would be worth retrying? Are you a fan of Basic instinct? Kindly release your thoughts in the comments below.

ANT-MAN AND THE WASP – QUANTUMANIA (2023): New Trailer Starring Paul Rudd, Jonathan Majors, Evangeline Lily…

Directed by Peyton Reed; Ant-Man and The Wasp – Quantumania has its key characters, including Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) and Hope Van Dyne (Evangeline Lilly) exploring the Quantum Realm. A place where they encounter strange creatures, Kang The Conqueror (Jonathan Majors) and an adventure that goes beyond what they thought possible.

Here’s the thing; it’s doubtful that I’ll actually watch this movie. Especially since I’ve not been moved to watch a single Ant-Man film yet.

So, considering the above, why have I featured the film at all? I love the music and the ways it’s used in this trailer. Additionally, I’ve always enjoyed a deep-voiced villain – and third, the trailer gets more interesting and fun for me from 1:34 minutes onwards. Well, except for that part where Ant-Man’s daughter screams ‘Dad!‘ It just feels as though a more emotional version of that was needed for the moment. Luckily though, we end on a high with Kang The Conqueror’s magnificent scream.

Have you seen any Ant-Man movies? How much does this one appeal to you?

Randall Park, Michael Douglas, Kathryn Newton, Katy M. O’Brian, William Jackson Harper, Michelle Pfeiffer, Bill Murray, Corey Stoll and Leonardo Taiwo also star

THE KOMINSKY METHOD (2021): The Things I Liked…

The Kominsky Method (2021), Michael Douglas, Sarah Baker, Netflix
The Kominsky Method (2021), Michael Douglas, Sarah Baker, Netflix

Created by Chuck Lorre of Two and a Half Men and The Big Bang TheoryThe Kominsky Method is a California-set comedy/drama series starring Michael Douglas as an ageing actor who now spends his days coaching up-and-coming young actors.

Also starring Alan Arkin, Lisa Edelstein and Sarah Baker, I watched the first season of The Kominsky Method almost two years ago and I remember thoroughly enjoying it. Season two turned out even better than the first, thanks to Lorre’s expert writing.

Douglas and Arkin are brilliant in their roles. The chemistry between the two actors and their excellent comic timing firmly places The Kominsky Method in the top five of my favourite things that Netflix has ever released. One might say it’s the side of me that’s a sucker for stories of beautiful friendships, but that’s only part of the reason I love the show.

Watching The Kominsky Method, especially the first two seasons, is a moving experience. One that’s highly likely to result in satisfying laughter as it reminds you of what great writing can look like.

Up to this point, I haven’t said too much about season three, the last instalment of The Kominsky Method. And that’s because even though it features several memorable scenes and bits of dialogue, I can’t deny that at least two things make it less impressive to me than the first two seasons. The absence of Arkin means there’s no Douglas/Arkin chemistry to enjoy. The second disappointment for me is how rushed it felt. And I don’t just mean because it’s six episodes instead of the usual eight.

If you haven’t already watched the show, definitely give seasons one and two of The Kominsky Method a chance. Like me, you may enjoy it so much that you’ll feel compelled to see how it all ends.

THE KOMINSKY METHOD – SEASON 3 (2021): New Trailer From Michael Douglas, Alan Arkin, Sarah Baker, Morgan Freeman…

The Kominsky Method (2021), Michael Douglas, Sarah Baker, Netflix

The Kominsky Method, one of my favourite things to come out of Netflix has one last season.

Starring Michael Douglas, Sarah Baker, Alan Arkin and Morgan Freeman; the comedy/drama follows an aging actor who had a brush with fame many years ago, and now he works as an acting coach.

I’m sad that this show is ending. However, better to end on a high, rather than to drive a good thing to the ground, right?

If you haven’t seen the first two seasons, I highly recommend. The acting is super, and the writing is good/funny. So, treat yourself to this little Netflix gem, why don’t ya?

Jane Seymour, Nancy Travis, Graham Rogers, Melissa Tang, Jenna Lyng Adams, Casey Thomas Brown, Emily Osment, Lisa Edelstein, Ramon Hilario Ashleigh LaThrop and Susan Sullivan, also star.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The Kominsky Method (2018).

The Kominsky Method is a new Netflix comedy series starring Michael Douglas, Alan Arkin and Sarah Baker.

Created by  Chuck Lorre, the story centres around an ageing actor, who once enjoyed a brush with fame but now makes his living as an acting coach.

I’m in for the beautiful bromance and, of course, the humour. I’m very hopeful also because this trailer also reminds me of another Netflix series I enjoy, Grace & Frankie.

The Kominsky Method Release Dates: November 16th, 2018 (US)…
