THE BOYS IN THE BAND (2020): The Things I Liked…

Starring Matt Bomer, Jim Parsons, Zachary Quinto and Andrew Rannells, the first great thing about director Joe Mantello’s The Boys In The Band is all the performances.

Second is all the funny moments with great comic timing, and how very well-written and paced it is.

I love the way the story unfolds like a beautiful play. A truth that makes sense since The Boys In The Band is a film adaptation of Mart Crowley’s play of the same name. A play that features several interesting characters, and manages the tension in scenes so well, that you can’t wait for all to be revealed.

In addition to capturing several moments of heartbreaking truth brilliantly, other personal highlights include the set design and the way the production is lit. Even though almost all of the action takes place during a party in a New York City apartment in 1968, there isn’t a moment when you find yourself wanting a change of scenery. All because what’s happing inside is thoroughly engaging, thanks to the very watchable complex characters.

Characters with understandable complexities, especially considering the difficulties they faced during that particular time in American history. A time when just being themselves was a far less accepted thing. And it is this reality that’s the underlying fuel. Fuel that results in a perfectly watchable film, thanks to great writing and brilliant performances by all.

Watch The Boys In The Band because it’s good.

New Joe Mantello directed drama The Boys In The Band stars Jim Parsons, Matt Bomer, Zachary Quinto and Andrew Rannells.

Set at a birthday party in New York City in 1968, a group of gay men find the drinks and laughs interrupted when a visitor from the host’s past turns the evening upside down.

I’m in for the intriguing tensions, good dialogue and great performances especially from Jim Parsons. I’ve been a fan of his since his turn as Sheldon Cooper on NBC’s The Big bang Theory.

Also, it looks as though everything happens in one apartment which should make things even more interesting.

Andrew Rannells, Charlie Carver, Robin de Jesus, Brian Hutchison, Michael Benjamin Washington, Tuc Watkins, John DeLuca and Tyler Miles also star.

The Boys In The Band Release Dates: September 30th, 2020 (US & UK)/Netflix…

PAPI CHULO (2018): The Things I Liked…

I was drawn to director John Butler’s Papi Chulo, a drama / comedy about a lonely weatherman’s relationship with a Latino immigrant worker because I love stories of beautiful, unexpected friendships. Especially humorous ones with engaging dialogue.

Starring Matt Bomer and Alejandro Patiño, the beautiful friendship at the core of Papi Chulo delivers some funny and moving moments. I was moved as I watched Bomer’s portrayal of the desperation that can often come with intense loneliness, including some of the missteps one can make while seeking a quick fix.

Besides the most moving moments which also includes the final scene in Papi Chulo, one of the film’s highlights for me is the amusing dialogue each time immigrant worker Ernesto (Patiño) spoke to his wife on the phone.

The main thing Butler’s movie didn’t quite deliver on for me is consistently engaging dialogue throughout; a reality that I confess had me tempted to turn to my phone for a game of vintage Tetris a few times.

Watch Papi Chulo if you’re curious enough. There are indeed better loneliness and ‘beautiful, unexpected friendship‘ movies out there but this one also isn’t the worst.

A concerned mother takes matters into her own hands following her government’s lack of concern when her son, a war correspondent is taken hostage while on assignment.

Directed by Maryam Keshavarz; Susan Saradon, Matt Bomer, Edie Falco and Damian Young star…

I’m somewhat intrigued by this because I want to know if the son makes it out alive. I’m also a tad hesitant though because of the low budget look and feel that I couldn’t help but notice.

Viper Club Release Dates: October 26th, 2018 (US)…
