THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE (2016): Fun, Funny, Cute…

Having only played the Rovio game on which The Angry Birds Movie is based a handful of times, I didn’t know why the birds are angry. The movie makes it quite clear that the green pigs have plenty to do with it. Though, I’m guessing that the whole thing of having wings but not being able to fly probably adds to the rage too, just a little.

I must admit that I enjoyed The Angry Birds Movie more than I expected. The cuteness of the birds, the comedy, the story and especially Chuck, the yellow bird voiced by Josh Gad. He stands out plenty, thanks to the funny dialogue, Gad’s comic timing and entertaining voice work.

During the movie, I definitely got the urge to download the game and play,  just so I could hurt those green piggies. Don’t be surprised if vengeance also enters your heart as you enjoy the movie.

Watch to see precisely why the piggies deserve to be punished. There’s also the cuteness, well-executed comic moments to enjoy and of course, that ending!

GAME OF THRONES (2011 – ): I Finally Watched To See What The Hype Is All About…

Game Of Thrones (2011-), Michiel Huisman (Daario Naharis)
Game Of Thrones (2011-), Michiel Huisman (Daario Naharis)

Based on the short stories by George R.R. Martin, my original plan to start watching Game of Thrones – only when the entire show is over has failed. I’m nearly up to date and I get why it’s a hit. The stories, characters, execution and eye candy are all part of the magic.

Soon after starting, I had strong doubts as to whether I could commit to watching the evil of the Lannisters and worse. Believe me, worse evil definitely follows. I eventually persevered but only after I was reassured that the Lannisters get whats coming to them in the following seasons.

To put it very simply, Game of Thrones is a fantasy TV show about the fight between several noble families for ultimate power; the power to sit upon the iron throne and rule over the land.

What became clear to me quite quickly as I watched is that there really is only one true royal that the iron throne appears to belong to. The real question is whether the rightful owner will win it. Having not read the books on which Game of Thrones is based, I have no idea – and with the shows reputation for killing characters the audience gets attached to, absolutely anything is possible. Even with all that, I think the belief that evil is not going to win in the end is important. It’s part of the reason why I’m sticking with it; to see how evil is ended and everything concluded.

At this current point in season 6, I have to admit that I’m ready for things to be permanently wrapped up. Don’t get me wrong. Though I wouldn’t call myself as completely obsessed, I like the show and some characters. Especially Peter dinklage’s Tyrion Lannister (because of his dialogue), Tom Wlaschiha’s Jaqen H’ghar (because of the general mystery plus the rhythm of his speech). Then there’s Kit Harrington’s John Snow and his impeccable hair, of course.

As for a few things about the show that I wish weren’t so, I think there are too many different stories and they’re not always the ones you wish you were watching in a given hour long episode.

At one or two moments, I did find myself thinking ‘but does that ring true?’ For example, imagine that you’re likely to be killed very shortly unless someone in the most deep of ‘sleeps’ wakes up and helps, would you not slap them in the face at least once when simply shouting and shaking them isn’t working? I’m not saying the slap would definitely work, but surely you would slap someone? Particularly if a bucket of iced water isn’t an option. It may be that everyone is just not as smart/violent as I am. Perhaps. Wink, wink.

There’s no doubt that Game of Thrones is good, it’s just a question of whether it’s your kind of good. What has impressed me most about the show isn’t a single character or story line, but rather, the 10-15 minute action sequence when the white walkers attack the wildlings. Epic is most definitely the word. I was gripped for every single second of that, thanks to a great musical score, well choreographed action, good editing and everything else.

If you haven’t already, watch it if you’re curious. I suspect that you are

THE BOSS (2016): Best, In Trailer Form…

The Boss (2016), Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Bell
The Boss (2016), Melissa McCarthy, Kristen Bell

The Boss, directed by Ben Falcone who co-wrote the story with his wife Melissa McCarthy is a comedy that isn’t quite as unwatchable as Tammy (2014) – the couple’s last collaboration, but that doesn’t mean it’s good either

What’s undoubtable by now is McCarthy’s comedy skills. Unfortunately,  I just see The Boss as another movie that’s actually more enjoyable in the format of short comedy sketches. I.e. the film’s trailer or something like an episode of Comedy Central’s Inside Amy Schumer.

The good thing about the comedy sketch/trailer format for this movie is that nobody would have to put up with what in the end feels like story telling, minus the commitment required to make it good enough.

As for the notable amount of profanity in the movie, I enjoy creative use of cuss words as much much as most, but in this film, it’s used so much that it actually stops adding to the comedy and borders on tedious and lazy.

I was really hoping that The Boss would have me raving about how much fun it is – as  I did with McCarthy’s last movie Spy (2015). Sadly, The Boss just feels kind of empty and instead makes me want to re-watch Horrible Bosses (2011), a really, rather good comedy.

Mary Sohn, Timothy Simons and Kathy Bates also star.

THE ANGRY BIRDS MOVIE (2016): An Easter Message From the Hatchlings

The Angry Birds Movie (2016), Cute Hatchling
The Angry Birds Movie (2016), Cute Hatchling

I know that the story of The Angry Birds Movie is generally about Red, ‘the one with the eyebrows’, but I’m obsessed with the cuteness of the baby birds, a.k.a the Hatchlings.

My wish is that these adorable and colourful little cuties feature as prominently as possible in the finished movie.

They may not quite be on the same level of cuteness as the Minions. However, seeing them is certainly very seriously smile-inducing. Especially the purple chocaholic.

The Angry Birds Movie is out on:  May 13th, 2016 (UK), May 20th, (US)…

A new The Angry Birds Movie trailer has landed and I definitely like it more than the teaser.

The use of Michael Jackson’s Bad seems to fit a little better now, perhaps. I can’t wait to find out if I’ll like this movie more than The Secret Life of Pets, which is due to be released two months later.
