SUCCESSION (2018): To Continue, Or Not To Continue, That Is The Question…

How do you tend to decide when to give up on a TV show/series? I usually quit for typical reasons. For example, there’s an actor in the show that I find annoying; that’s a generally typical reason, right? Another would be if the story is silly and not in an enjoyable way. Or the writing is lacking, the location, music, plus the editing is uninspiring.

Additional explanations for why I’ve had to abort viewing sessions include the subject matter leaning too far into the dark side, and I’m neither in the state or mood to endure the onslaught.

I’ve even been known to watch and enjoy all of the first season of a series, only to realise that I must have been especially vulnerable and needy at the time. Because now that season two is here, I find the show thoroughly annoying, plus I’m having difficulty figuring out how I could have liked it so much the previous year. This latter predicament has occurred just once, and the unfortunate series in question was New Girl. (2011-2018)

More recently, I’ve started watching a show I’ve heard so many people talk about positively. Succession is the name, and it’s an HBO drama series about a family known for controlling the largest media/entertainment company in the world. It’s specifically about how things change when their father steps down as the head of the company.

I’ve progressed as far as finishing episode one of the first season – and watched one-third of episode two.

Starring Brian Cox, Sarah Snook, Jeremy Strong and Kieran Culkin, the talented cast is certainly more than capable. The writing is noticeably good, and the theme tune (which happens to be my favourite thing about the series so far) is just perfect. As such, my aversion to continuing with Succession might be that I do not want to see families in serious conflict right now. Especially considering how much the anxiety-inducing sibling relationships in Succession leave much to be desired.

I’d probably have relished the chance to watch all of Succession, if I’d come across it at a time when I was still super curious about the dynamics of various kinds of families, particularly that which is different from my own. I may also be mistakenly feeling a little too well-versed in the ins and outs of the human condition. Therefore, I am too sure about how this story is going to turn out.

Or, maybe I’m just not connecting well enough to any of the seemingly unsympathetic characters, yet, and I’m being judgemental. Whatever the truth may be, what I do not want is to quit Succession too early. Could I hold on for the corporate dramatics? Or have I seen a a fair amount of that in other shows like Suits (2011-2019)?

Have you watched Succession? Is it worth continuing with the series? Which shows have you had to quit early recently and why?

Let me know in the comments.

WINCHESTER – THE HOUSE THAT GHOSTS BUILT (2018): New Trailer From Jason Clarke, Helen Mirren, Sarah Snook…

Winchester - The House That Ghosts Built (2018), Helen Mirren
Winchester – The House That Ghosts Built (2018), Helen Mirren

In Winchester – The House That Ghosts Built Helen Mirren is an eccentric firearm heiress who believes that she’s being haunted by the souls of people killed by the Winchester repeating rifle. Jason Clarke and Sarah Snook also star while Peter and Michael Spierig write / direct…

For some reason it crossed my mind after watching this trailer that there maybe an interesting twist in this story. I’m interested because it’s Helen Mirren and I’m hoping that the horrors are more like those in Crimson Peak (2015) rather than something that will induce nightmares for me.

Winchester – The House That Ghosts Built Release Dates: February 2nd, 2018 (US); March 2nd, 2018 (UK)…

THE GLASS CASTLE (2017): New Trailer From Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson, Naomi Watts…

The perfectly titled The Glass Castle stars Brie Larson, Woody Harrelson and Naomi Watts. Written and directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, the story centres around a young girl’s coming of age in a poor, dysfunctional family of nonconformist nomads…

The subject matter, this trailer and the actors have me so interested in this movie. Stories about parent / offspring relationships especially once the children are grown up are always interesting to me. Also, what wonderful roles these are for all the actors involved.

Max Greenfield and Sarah Snook also star.

The Glass Castle release Dates: August 11th, 2017 (US)…

THE DRESSMAKER (2015): For The Story, Fashion & Style

The Dressmaker (2016), Kate Winstlet
The Dressmaker (2016), Kate Winstlet

The Dressmaker is a fun revenge drama set in a rural small town in Australia. I use the word ‘fun’ because of the dialogue, characters, cinematography and the haute couture fashion and colours of the 1950s.

The character played by Hugo Weaving is the source of several laughs and a definite highlight. As always, the film’s star, Kate Winslet delivers a wonderful performance. The movie’s beautiful soundtrack, courtesy of composer, David Hirschfelder is also another plus.

Directed by Jocelyn Moorhouse and based on the novel by Rosalie Ham, watch The Dressmaker because it’s good and  you probably won’t be able to guess how things are going to unfold until they do.

Sarah Snook, Judy Davis, and Liam Hemsworth also star. Here’s the trailer for a taster.

Starring Kate Winslet, Hugo Weaving, Sarah Snook and Liam Hemsworth, The Dressmaker is a revenge drama about a glamorous woman, who returns to her rural Australian small town…

I’ll watch because I love Winslet and yes, also definitely because Liam Hemsworth looks dreamy. But mostly because I love Kate Winslet.

STEVE JOBS (2015): Time For The Michael Fassbender Interpretation

Steve Jobs (2015), Kate Winslet, Michael Fassbender
Steve Jobs (2015), Kate Winslet, Michael Fassbender

Two of my favourite UK Actors, Michael Fassbender and Kate Winslet star in the story of Apple cofounder, Steve Jobs.

Like many, I’m already very aware of the story of the celebrated visionary, but of course I’ll watch the film, if only just take in the artistry of the Actors, the magic of dialogue king/ screen writer, Aaron Sorkin and Director Danny Boyle.

Another highlight is the appearance of one of my favourite funny men, Seth Rogen in another serious role, this time as the other half of the Apple founding team, Steve Wozniak.

Now? The trailer…

Release Date (s): October 23rd (US), November 13th (UK).

Happy Steve Jobs 🙂

Just like that it’s here, that Steve Jobs biopic that for a moment there, looked like it may not happen.

Written by Aaron Sorkin, directed by Danny Boyle, starring Michael Fassbender, Kate Winslet, Seth Rogen, and Jeff Daniels, here is the first look teaser trailer.

With film making talent like this, I can barely wait.

Happy Steve Jobs 🙂

PREDESTINATION (2014): Why You Need To Be Ready

Predestination (2014), Ethan Hawke
Predestination (2014), Ethan Hawke

Written and directed by film making brothers Michael and Peter Spierig, Predestination is a well acted mystery / sci-fi film, starring Ethan Hawke and Sarah Snook.

Due to the time travelling element, this is the kind of movie with plenty going on including a number of twists and turns that come quick and fast, so you’ll certainly need to be ready and alert.

Predestination (2014), Sarah Snook
Predestination (2014), Sarah Snook

As I watched, I found myself comparing Predestination to it’s more thrilling cousin, Inception (2010). Not that both films deal with the same subject matter exactly… but among other things, it didn’t help that one of the characters in the movie looked like a younger version of one of the Actors in Inception. I’ll let you figure out which one.

Watch it anyway if science fiction and particularly time travel are generally your thing. I’m only into sci-fi sometimes.

Happy Predestination 🙂
