COLLATERAL BEAUTY (2016): The Thing I Liked…

I may have shed a tear or two because Collateral Beauty is a story about a father unable to function after his six-year-old daughter passes, but that doesn’t mean it was a ‘weepy’ holiday film done well.

Starring Will Smith, Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley, Edward Norton,  Naomie Harris and Jacob Latimore, the signs that the David Frankel-directed movie wasn’t going to be the best experience overall, started with me finding myself irritated by Smith’s ‘mourning face’ – within the first 20 minutes. Not really great since he spends at least 95% of the film wearing said face.

In addition to my apparent impatience with seemingly prolonged periods of misery, I was disappointed that Collateral Beauty didn’t come together as well as I’d hoped. There’s something about the pace and edit that didn’t sit well with me. Mainly, however, I find myself leaning towards the quality of the story as another reason why my experience was underwhelming. Perhaps I didn’t get to spend enough time with Howard (Smith)  before his tragedy. Had I done so, I may have cared more deeply about his distress. Most of the cast, if not all are almost too talented for their performances to be the problem.

The few moments of humour between Winslet, Norton and Pena’s characters is my main highlight. I also liked the dialogue when Knightly’s character is literally on stage and reading her lines to the young man played by Latimore. I was quite taken at this point. Beyond these few brief moments where I’m really engaged, the only other aspect of Collateral Beauty that made me happy is the imagery of New York City. I really do miss that place.

Watch Collateral Beauty if nothing will stop you, just don’t expect great things.

BRIGHT (2017): New Trailer From Will Smith, Joel Edgerton, Noomi Rapace…

bright-2017-will-smith

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Bright (2017).

Will Smith, Noomi Rapace and Joel Edgerton’s new movie, Bright is directed by David Ayer and set in a world where mystical creatures live side by side with humans.

Smith plays a human cop who’s forced to work with an Orc (Edgerton) to find a weapon everyone is prepared to kill for.

I’m going to think positively about this movie for three reasons. The first two being that the story is intriguing and this trailer looks promising, even though it shows very little. Lastly,  Ayer’s last movie (Suicide Squad (2016) was far from great but he did make several before that are still celebrated today; Fury (2014) and End Of Watch (2012), to name just two.

And there I was thinking that orcs only existed in Warcraft (2016)

Edgar Ramírez, Lucy Fry, Ike Barinholtz and Kenneth Choi also star.

Bright Release Dates: December 2017 (US & UK)…

SUICIDE SQUAD (2016) Movie Review: The Thing I Liked…

Suicide Squad (2016), Margot Robbie

The trailer for Suicide Squad, a.k.a. DC Comics’s answer to The Avengers (2012) is one of my favourite movie trailers of 2016. Fast forward to the first hour of actually watching Suicide Squad and I’m thinking… ‘Why does this feel like such a big mess?

After my surprise at my initial reaction, the movie does thankfully become a little more watchable, after the first hour. Though certainly not enough to make Suicide Squad a particularly great experience.

A sizeable part of my issue with director David Ayer’s film is linked to the fact that, unlike Marvel’s The Avengers, stand-alone movies for most, if not all of the characters in Suicide Squad, don’t previously exist. This adds to the already gargantuan challenge of weaving a well-constructed and engaging story featuring all the numerous players, something this film fails to do. I didn’t realise how much Marvel’s approach made a lot of sense until, as a non-reader of comic books, I watched Suicide Squad.

Additionally, I know that superhero movies aren’t real but something about Suicide Squad was even more unbelievable than any other superhero movie I remember watching. I must admit that Cara Delevigne’s portrayal of Enchantress didn’t help matters. ‘Ridiculous’ is unfortunately the word that came to mind most times I saw her character and heard her speak.

As for the characters I did like, Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) is cool but I found that I didn’t identify with her as much as I thought I would. The fact that all members of the Suicide Squad are hardcore criminals, I’m sure has something to do with it.

Deadshot (Will Smith) is another favourite because he too has that cool factor, thanks in large part to the nature of his particular set of skills. That, combined with how his story is shot is part of what kept me watching. Harley Quinn and Deadshot’s dynamic also helped hold the story together, where possible.

Is Jared Leto’s Joker going to be as arresting as Heath Ledger’s brilliant work in The Dark Knight (2008)?’ This was a question I wanted the answer to and I kind of got it… but not really, because The Joker is barely seen in this movie. And even though he is one of the better-known characters before this film – thanks to Batman, Joker’s stand-alone movie really should have come before Suicide Squad.

Overall, Suicide Squad is a movie you watch if you’re curious enough. It’s just not as good as it should have been.

Last but not least, I didn’t want to have to say that ‘Marvel’s The Avengers did it better‘, but I’ve never really been very good at lying to myself.

Collateral Beauty is a movie about how one man makes it back after a tragedy sets him off on a downward spiral.

Directed by David Frankel, the talented cast includes Will Smith, Kate Winslet, Helen Mirren, Keira Knightley and Edward Norton.

I’m excited because I love ‘Lady Winslet.’ That’s how I like to refer to my favourite actresses and, generally, any inspiring female.

I’d say Lady Mirren, too, but she’s already officially a Dame, you see.

I anticipate that this film will make some people cry. Not me, though. (LIES, I tell.)

Michael Peña and Naomie Harris also star.

Collateral Beauty Release Dates: December 16th, 2016 (US); December 30th, 2016 (UK)…

CONCUSSION (2015): Intense New Trailer With Will Smith As Dr. Bennet Omalu

Concussion (2015), Will Smith
Concussion (2015), Will Smith

I knew this public holiday had to gift me with a great new trailer. And it has, for Will Smith has a brand new movie.

I can’t wait to see this, first because it looks good, and second, Smith sounds absolutely nothing like himself, therefore making for an even more satisfying transformation for the spectator.

Concussion is written and directed by Peter Landesman, the man responsible for 2014’s Kill The messenger starring Jeremy Renner.

Alec Baldwin and British actress Gugu Mbatha-Raw also star, along with Stephen Moyer, Luke Wilson and Albert Brooks.

Due for release stateside on December 25th (2015) and January 29th (2016) for the U.K.
