I Play Rocky is director Peter Farrelly’s latest drama/biography starring Anthony Ippolito as Sylvester Stallone. It’s the story of how a then-struggling actor wrote the ultimate underdog story, and his fight to play the lead, Rocky Balboa.
Matt Dillon, Toby Kebbell and Anna, Sophia Robb are among the key cast.
This is for everyone who will never get enough of the Rocky Balboa story. In fairness, this is technically the Sylvester Stallone story. But perhaps they’re one and the same.
Apparently, Stallone’s involvement in this film only goes as far as a Zoom call with Ippolito.
We can probably expect a well-executed and universal underdog story. Will you be watching?

I Play Rocky has just been promoted to a must watch this year. I love the behind the scenes story of Rocky and I think filmmaking biopics are an untapped resource.
Only a handful of filmmaking biopics have been released in recent decades, and, and, I can’t think of any that intrigued me as much as this one. Saying that though, embarrassingly, I may have seen one or two and have simply forgotten what they are. ☺️

I know a little bit about his struggle to make it, and this looks like a great origin story of the Hollywood legend that is Sly. The pure perseverance of this guy is inspiring.
What I also find interesting is that both Sly and Arnie have very different origin stories, but they both share the struggle to overcome the prejudice they received and the fact that they are both smart and overachievers (despite their dumb big-muscle guy look). Nobody ever said they’re great actors, but their onscreen charisma is undisputed.
I fully agree on their charisma, especially Schwarzenegger, because I’ve seen more of his movies and I thoroughly enjoyed Pumping Iron (1977).
