BUDDYMOON (2016): The Things I Liked…

Buddymoon (2016), David Giuntoli and Flula Borg

Buddymoon, the bromance directed by Alex Simmons and written by its stars David Giuntoli and Flula Borg had its moments, yet I was left with more to be desired.

I didn’t really start to have a good time until the last twenty minutes of the movie. Prior to that, there were one or two moments of dialogue that coaxed out the slightest of smiles.

Nevertheless, there I was in the mood to watch a different movie altogether, as this one played. For example, Pineapple Express (2008) for its brilliantly executed bromance and Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels (1998), because Guy Ritchie’s film has one of the most satisfying ‘let’s drink and get crazy’ sequences ever, featuring two or more friends.

The elements of Buddymoon that made it less than what I had hoped for include the absence of truly engaging drama/comedy in the first two-thirds. There is a special chemistry between the two leads. However, it also felt awkward in parts. Furthermore, over-reliance on Borg’s German accent and peculiar behaviour to supply much of the comedy had me wishing for a tighter edit.

The two things I like most about Buddymoon are the soundtrack and the woodland scenery. Another reason to watch Borg and Giuntoli’s movie might be to hear a different kind of German accent than you’re used to, should you be into that sort of thing. Lastly, in case you’re curious, here’s the Buddymoon trailer.

Happy Film Loving,
