MEN IN BLACK – INTERNATIONAL (2019): The Things I Liked…

Instead of the focus being solely on a big alien threat that needs eliminating, in Men In Black – International, there’s the pressing matter of a mole within the MIB organisation to deal with.

Starring Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson and Emma Thompson, my favourite thing about Men in Black – International is the visual effects and Emma Thompson’s character. All the other key characters weren’t terrible, but unfortunately, the script for director F. Gary Gray’s movie just seemed overly complicated, and not as exciting as initially hoped.

Hemsworth and T. Thompson’s chemistry did help matters. Nevertheless, approximately twenty minutes into the movie, I realised I was missing Will Smith’s Men In Black (1997) performance. There’s something about his comedic expertise that I feel would have added an extra layer of humour and fun to this film. To be clear, I’m definitely not saying ‘Put Smith in this movie and it would have been great overall’, because for that to be true, a much better story and script is required. I just think that Men In Black – International could have been better, more exciting and funny.

One other little highlight is the well-choreographed fight scenes. They helped me to stop dwelling too much on some of the dodgy dialogue, the cheap plastic toy gun noises made by some of the MIB weapons early on in the movie and and my general disappointment.

Watch Men In Black – International if you’re curious. It’s kind of fun. It’s just not especially good.

JAY AND SILENT BOB REBOOT (2019): New Trailer From Kevin Smith, Chris Hemsworth, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck…

Jay & Silent Bob Reboot (2019), Kevin Smith, Jason Mewes

2001’s cult classic Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back has a sequel coming. This time the two friends Jay and Silent Bob are returning to Hollywood to stop a reboot of ‘Bluntman and Chronic,’ a movie about their alter egos.

Written/directed by Kevin Smith, this movie, Jay and Silent Bob Reboot, stars much of the original cast, including Smith himself, Jason Mewes, Ben Affleck, and new faces such as Chris Hemsworth, plus Matt Damon.

I don’t believe I’ve watched the original movie, but I am curious. I’m also always intrigued by films with a star-filled cast list.

Melissa Benoist, Joe Manganiello, Val Kilmer, Rosario Dawson, Grant Gustin, Justin Long, Jason Biggs, Kate Micucci and Jason Lee also star.

Jay & Silent Bob Release Dates: October 15th, 2019 (US)…

BAD TIMES AT THE EL ROYALE (2018): The Things I Liked…

Bad Times At The El Royale (2018), Jon Hamm, 20th Century Fox
Bad Times At The El Royale (2018), Jon Hamm, 20th Century Fox

Set in a rundown hotel with a dark past, Bad Times At Hotel El Royale, the story of seven strangers with secrets to bury and one last shot at redemption is a movie I can’t say I enjoyed a lot.

There were moments of beauty, including the cinematography and the absolutely divine brown suede coat/jacket on Dakota Johnson’s character’s back. I also liked the pay-off in regards to the story of Miles Miller, the one hotel employee, and what he was found to be capable of. Yet, even though all the characters were portrayed well by the actors, it was only really Miles Miller whose story most intrigued me.

The scene in which Cynthia Erivo’s Darlene completely verbally sizes up Chris Hemsworth’s Billy Lee. That’s a great moment because of the dialogue and Billy Lee’s inability to deny the truth.

As for other things I liked quite a bit less in director Drew Goddard’s film, I didn’t enjoy the way the story was structured. As a result, I was annoyed by how pointless continuing to watch felt at times. The film’s length, pace, and the absence of a thoroughly engaging and natural flow for the entirety of the movie were the key lowlights.

I say, if you’re really curious, give Bad Times at Hotel El Royale a chance. Perhaps you’ll find much to love. For me, my mind often went to other movies I’ve seen that featured many characters, yet remained thrillingly engaging throughout. I just wish I could name an even more comparable example than Magnolia (1999) right now.

MEN IN BLACK INTERNATIONAL (2019): New Trailer From Chris Hemsworth, Tessa Thompson, Liam Neeson, Rebecca Ferguson…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Men In Black – International (2019).

Protectors of Earth from the scum of the universe, the Men In Black are back with new F. Gary Gray-directed sci-fi/action/comedy, Men in Black – International.

Starring Tessa Thompson, Chris Hemsworth, Liam Neeson and Rebecca Ferguson, the focus this time is on dealing with a new big threat, a mole in the Men in Black organisation.

The chemistry between Thompson and Hemsworth is great. I can’t wait to see this new ‘international’ angle. It helps that it’s partly set in my beloved London town, but really, this trailer is pretty well done.

I’ve been a fan of Rebecca Ferguson as an action star since Mission – Impossible Rogue Nation (2015), and now, based on this trailer, Tessa Thomson is looking like another new favourite.

Fingers crossed that Hemsworth’s seemingly British accent turns out well.

Emma Thompson, Rafe Spall, Kumail Nanjiani and Davina Sitaram also star.

Men In Black International Release Dates: June 14th, 2019 (US & UK)…

Key cast includes Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Scarlett Johansson and Chris Hemsworth.

I definitely didn’t see this trailer coming but I sure am glad it’s here.

What intrigues me most, among other things, is how Captain Marvel will fit into the mix with all the other Avengers.
