AVENGERS – INFINITY WAR (2018): The Things I Liked…

From director brothers Joe and Anthony Russo, Avengers – Infinity War is the one where the likes of Captain America, Black Widow, Thor and Iron Man, along with their allies come together in an attempt to defeat the powerful Thanos (Josh Brolin). For Thanos is hellbent on not just putting an end to half of planet Earth, but half of the entire universe, for reasons including it’s his ‘destiny’.

It’s not often that I’m struggling to come up with what I find to be ‘not so great’ about a movie I’m reviewing, but I really have no complaints about Avengers – Infinity War. The story and execution are great, and Josh Brolin as Thanos is very much the perfect supervillain.

Brolin did a truly memorable job with his character. His voice work is perfect, and it did a lot to help make Infinity War the impressive movie that it is, in addition to the stunning visual effects, dialogue, and so on.

Thanos is the kind of villain I actually thought Ultron would be in Avengers – Age of Ultron (2015). At the very least, in terms of screen time. James Spader’s performance as Ultron was indeed great. It’s just that, among a few other things, Ultron wasn’t featured in the movie half as much as the film’s trailer suggested he would be.

If by chance you, too, enjoyed The Avengers (2012) but were left disappointed enough with Avengers Age of Ultron, that you took a two-year break from the Avengers movies, Infinity War will very likely get you right back on board. Another reason you’ll want to get back into it all is Endgame (2019), of course.

DOCTOR STRANGE (2016): Good Movie…

Doctor Strange (2016), Benedict Cumberbatch, Marvel Studios

‘Fun’ and ‘good’ are the words for Doctor Strange; Marvel’s story of a brilliant neurosurgeon who’s drawn into the mystic arts while seeking physical and spiritual healing.

Starring the well-voiced Benedict Cumberbatch, director Scott Derrickson’s film is definitely a superhero movie. And as someone who was in the midst of superhero movie fatigue at the time of release, I’m happy to say that the film’s different class of weaponry/enemy really worked to make the experience that little bit different and certainly more interesting.

I don’t know how great a thing this is, but the impressive visual effects in Doctor Strange kind of kept my beloved Inception (2010) at front-of-mind, at least half the time. In fact, I couldn’t help but wonder about how much more amazing I’d find Marvel’s move if I hadn’t seen much of the style of effects first in Christopher Nolan’s Inception.

Arresting visuals aside, the execution of the growth of Strange’s character from beginning to end, particularly how satisfying it was to watch him grow because he needed to, is my favourite thing about Derrickson’s movie.

I absolutely took some time aside to fantasise about personally having Strange’s abilities, without the suffering that came before, of course.

Watch it if you haven’y already. It’s worthy.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Doctor Strange (2016)

It may not look like it at first and second glance, (at least not to me) but Doctor Strange, the latest movie starring Benedict Cumberbatch, Rachel McAdams and Tilda Swinton is part of the Marvel universe.

Trailer 2

Even though I’m over the ‘saving the world’ storyline synonymous with Marvel’s movies, I’m open to seeing how Doctor Strange will do the same thing but differently, somehow.

I suspect I’m not alone when I say some of the footage in this trailer brings Inception (2010) to mind.

Chiwetel Ejiofor, Mads Mikkelsen and Benedict Wong also star.

Doctor Strange Release Dates: October 28th, 2016 (UK); November 4th, 2016 (US)…
