Maria Bello, Josh Wiggins, Kyle MacLachlan and Darren Mann are the stars of Giant Little Ones.

Witten / directed by Keith Behrman, Giant Little Ones is a new drama about an unexpected incident at a 17th birthday party. The kind that changes the lives of two teenage boys who’ve been best friends since childhood…

I’m drawn to this because the trailer isn’t bad and I want to compare the story to that of last year’s LGBT inclusive teen movie hit, Love, Simon (2018).

Additionally, I’m quite the sucker for good movies where parents to LGBT offspring do right by their children. This film certainly looks like one of those.

Kiana Madeira, Peter Outerbridge, Niamh Wilson, Olivia Scriven and Cory Lee also star.

LOVE SIMON (2018): The Things I Liked…

Love Simon (2018), Nick Robinson
Love Simon (2018), Nick Robinson

Love, Simon is a good coming of age movie about the complicated love story of a young closeted gay man.

Starring Nick Robinson (Simon), Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel, I particularly appreciate how well written and well cast the story is. I now think that a part of me had probably been waiting for a good teen movie that was different enough from all the others I’d loved before – and this one happens to to tick the boxes.

It could very well be the sunshine that made everything appear so beautiful but the film’s location was actually a highlight thanks to all that light and colour. Director Greg Berlanti’s film deals well with a good amount of the challenges that come with being a teenager (gay or not) in high school, in America and he does this without delving too much into the darker aspects. This is a drama / comedy / romance after all.

Performance-wise, Robinson and the rest of the cast do a good job in their roles, including the annoying character who I’m sure I found quite annoying because his character was supposed to be annoying within the story. I know this to be true because he became less and less annoying as others within the story found him less obnoxious as the story went on.

I write all the above to say that I’m a fan of Love, Simon because it’s well done. I also love what it means for representation. Watch it because it’s good and ‘feel good’.

LOVE, SIMON (2018): New Trailer From Jennifer Garner, Josh Duhamel, Nick Robinson…

Greg Berlanti directs Nick Robinson, Jennifer Garner and Josh Duhamel in Love, Simon; a new coming-of-age drama about the hilarious, scary, life-changing and complicated love story of a young closeted gay man…

As a friend pointed out, this movie may just be the first mainstream teen film where the central story is about the coming out of a young gay man. This isn’t a thing I’ve seen before. I could be wrong of course, but at this momment, I remember no other mainstream teenage movie with a gay male protagonist.

I’m curious enough to watch it because of this uniqueness and because Nick Robinson wasn’t terrible in Everything, Everything (2017).

Talitha Eliana Bateman, Katherine Langford and Keiynan Lonsdale also star.
