The latest from Eddie Murphy, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jonah Hill, Lauren London, Nia Long and David Duchovny is a comedy/Romance directed by and co-written by Kenya Barris.

You People is a story about modern love, family dynamics and clashing cultures through the experiences of a new couple as they get to know each other’s families.

The comedy talent is the main reason I need to see this. Especially the pairing of Eddie Murphey and Julia Louis-Dreyfus. The latter happens to be my favourite comedic actress. And the former is responsible for my introduction to stand-up comedy as an art form, thanks to a smash hit comedy special called Raw (1987).

I’m expecting a handful of laughs and some tense but very entertaining dinner table moments. I can only imagine how much fun they all had filming this.

Will you be watching You People? Whose performance are you most interested in seeing?

Travis Bennett, Deon Cole, Elliott Gould, Mike Epps, Yung Miami, Bryan Greenberg, Khadijah Haqq, La La Anthony, Rhea Perlman and Molly Gordon also star.

You People Release Dates: January 27th, 2023 (US & UK)…

DOWNHILL (2020): The Thing I Liked

Downhill (2020), Will Ferrell, Julia Louis Dreyfus, FoxSearchlight.
Downhill (2020), Will Ferrell, Julia Louis Dreyfus, FoxSearchlight

I liked Force Majeure; I mean Downhill, which is a remake of Force Majeure (2014); a French film I’ve never seen. As such, there’ll be no comparisons here today. And there’s also a chance that if you’ve seen Force Majeure, you won’t quite agree with the one or two of the positive things I have to say about Downhill, which is of course fine.

Set in the Swiss Alps during a family skiing holiday, and in the aftermath of an unexpected avalanche, directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash’s Downhill isn’t quite the comedy I expected.

I see Faxon and Rash’s movie as the story of a couple’s marriage falling apart, which kind of sounds like a lot, but Downhill is not as emotionally taxing as Marriage Story (2019), for example. Whereas what happens in Marriage Story made audiences sad, Downhill made me feel awkward and uncomfortable; like a concerned friend realising for the first time, just how unhealthy a couple’s relationship is.

I found Downhill amusing in parts. It’s kind of hard for it not to be with comedy greats like Louis-Dreyfus and Ferrell involved. I enjoyed both their performances. Yet, overall the movie is not as hilarious as I thought it might be. The dramatic/awkward moments stood out more than the comedy.

I see Downhill more as a cautionary tale that’s there to remind us to stay alert; just in case we’re ever in danger of getting involved with a complete coward.

Watch it if you’re curious. Or, you can always watch Force Majeure instead. I’ve heard that it’s better.

ONWARD (2020): The Things I Liked…

Onward (2019), Disney Pixar
Onward (2019), Disney Pixar

Onward is a movie with a beautiful big brother / little brother relationship at its heart. And this relationship is my favourite thing about the latest Disney Pixar animated adventure starring Chris pratt, Tom Holland, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Octavia Spencer.

Set in a suburban fantasy world, two teenage elf brothers set off on a quest to discover if there is still magic out there. A quest that neither could do without the other.

In terms of how much I enjoyed the story, I think Onward is OK. I wanted to have been more engrossed with it all but there wasn’t enough newness to it, theme wise. There wasn’t necessarily much animated cuteness either butI l doubt I’d have noticed that if I’d loved the way the story played from beginning to end. It’s really the last third of director Dan Scanlon’s film that I enjoyed most. Before then, I was more than a little impatient for the results of the film’s central magic spell to manifest.

Other things I enjoyed about Onward include the fullness of Holland’s character Ian’s blue hair and what Scanlon’s film has to say about belief in general – but especially self belief and confidence.

As far as animated movies about sibling relationships go, particularly the big brother / little brother dynamic, my favourite will probably always be Big Hero 6 (2014).

Watch Onward because it’s not bad and perhaps you’ll find even more to love than I did.

From directors Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, in Downhill, Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Will Ferrell star as a married couple forced to re-evaluate their lives and their feelings after narrowly escaping an avalanche in the Swiss Alps.

Other key cast members includes Miranda Otto, Zach Woods…

I love Louis-Dreyfus and this looks good, dramatic and funny, even though it’s not a comedy.

I’m also looking forward to seeing the on screen dynamic between Louis-Dreyfus and Ferrell. Especially since Ferrell doesn’t seem to be playing a likeable character.

Zach Woods, Kristofer Hivju, Hélène Cardona, Zoe Chao, Giulio Berruti, Julian Grey, Ammon Jacob Ford, Matt Lindquist, Nadiv Molcho, Kimberly Rydell, Jono Bergmann and Peter Schorn also star.

Downhill Release Dates: February 14th, 2019 (US)…

The two moons at 01:33 into this trailer have me intrigued; the same with the idea of usually majestic unicorns as ‘vermin.’

I can’t wait to see how this story about a world of imaginary creatures such as pixies, mermaids, gnomes, unicorns and pet dragons actually unfolds.
