SIRENS (2025): The Things I Liked…

Sirens (2025), Milly Alcock, Julianne Moore, Netflix
Sirens (2025), Milly Alcock, Julianne Moore, Netflix

Episode one of Sirens is perfect, especially because it feels as though it does not have a second of wasted screen time, thanks to a great edit.

Sirens is the story of Devon (Meghann Fahy), a big sister who is concerned about her younger sister’s (Milly Alcock) unhealthy relationship with her new boss (Juliane Moore), while Devon herself is struggling with other personal challenges.

Survival is a key theme in creator Molly Smith Metzler’s dark comedy/drama. I enjoyed how the tensions between trauma, familial bonds, boundaries and freedom featured in a generally well-woven story, one that leads to the three female protagonists making choices they felt they had to, however ill-imprudent.

I would say that Sirens isn’t perfect overall. However, I found it more than watchable. And, I like how, upon conclusion, things felt as though they ended exactly as they were supposed to, but somehow, in a non-predictable way.

Watch Netflix’s new five-episode series for the good performances and all the other reasons mentioned above. You may get annoyed at least once by a character’s ill-advised decision once or twice, but you will be entertained.

BEVERLY HILLS COP – AXEL F (2024): The Things I Liked…

It’s going to be fantastic. Trust me.’ – Axel Foley

I should have because Eddie Murphy, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Taylour Paige and Kevin Bacon’s latest movie, Beverly Hills Cop – Axel F is good.

I was worried that some of the energy and magic of the original movies would be absent. How misguided! The chemistry between Murphy and everyone he shares the screen with is still great. Couple that with a satisfying story, engaging new characters, a good dose of nostalgia, plus expert use of the Beverly Hills Cop movie theme music, and we have a recipe to put a massive smile on our faces.

If you enjoyed at least one of the earlier Beverly Hills Cop movies, you won’t want to miss this one. In addition to Murphy’s undeniable charm, Kevin Bacon Bacon is a well-cast bad guy; Gordon-Levitt is perfect in his role, and there’s that well-choreographed ambush scene. I haven’t even said anything about the perfect ending.

As for the things I didn’t love about director Mark Molloy’s movie, I tried hard to think and I only have two things, barely. First, there was a point at the beginning where I thought: Really? they didn’t modernise the theme music, even a little bit?’ I ended up swallowing my words with that one. Second, ‘Is Axel still realistically getting away with his antics? I mean, he’s not a rookie who doesn’t know better any more.’ I completely forgot about that soon enough because I was too busy having a good time.

Some have said that Netflix should have granted Beverly Hills Cop – Axel F a big screen release, and I can’t say I disagree.  But I’m also not mad that I can immediately go back to re-watch my favourite scenes.

It’s not even been a month since the success of Bad Boys – Ride Or Die. It looks to me like 2024 is the year of good cop action/comedy/crime sequels. I say, bring on the next one! The next Axel F, the next Bad Boys and the next…

…did somebody say Rush Hour?

BEVERLY HILLS COP – AXEL F (2024): New Trailer Starring Eddie Murphy, Kevin Bacon, Judge Reinhold, John Ashton…

Read my spoiler-free movie review of Beverly Hills Cop – Axel F (2024).

Something unexpected is coming, especially for fans of Eddie Murphy as Axel Foley in the Beverly hills Cop movies of the 80s and early 90s. Namely, Beverly Hills Cop (1984) Beverly Hills Cop II (1987) and Beverly Hills Cop III (1994).

Directed by Mark Molloy, Beverly Hills Cop – Axel F has Murphy’s detective character Axel Foley drawn back to the opulent neibhourhoods of Beverly Hills, to investigate the untimely demise of a long-time confidant.

There are still scenes from the early Beverly Hils Cop movies that I fondly think of from time to time. Unsurprisingly, nostalgia is a big part of why I have to see this. That, along with Murphy’s highly memorable standup comedy work, i.e. Raw.

I don’t recall seeing Kevin Bacon in the earlier Beverly Hills Cop movies, but I do like the idea of him playing a villain type.

Here’s to hoping that Beverly Hills Cop – Axel F will be so fun and engaging that we won’t miss the magic of the first three films. Please, pleae, please, movie Gods!

Have you seen the first Beverly Hills Cop movie, and will you be watching this one?
