STRANGE BUT TRUE (2019): The Things I Liked…

Based on the novel by John Searles, Strange But True, a story about a young woman who surprises the family of her deceased boyfriend by telling them she’s pregnant with his child is a good, suspenseful thriller I’m glad to have seen.

Besides the notable performances by all involved, including Nick Robinson, Greg Kinnear, Margaret Qualley and Amy Ryan; director Rowan Athale’s movie features a central mystery that builds up in a satisfying way. A mystery that had me feeling all kinds of emotions at once. Especially as I began to notice that nearly everyone isn’t quite who you first think them to be.

The way the film opens and closes with a short reflective voice over reminded me of one of my favourite TV show, Grey’s Anatomy. I feel that Grey’s definitely does a better job with the voice overs overall. Still, I found Athale’s film to be mostly good and well put together. It’s dark, suspenseful and worth the time I dedicated.

It was also interesting to see the different ways the key protagonists dealt with grief. As the film showed me, grief can make some people near impossible to be around. Yet with great understanding, anything is possible.

Watch it because it’s good.

Margaret Qualley, Amy Ryan, Nick Robinson and Greg Kinnear, are the stars of new thriller, Strange But True.

Direceted by Rowan Athale, this is the story of a woman who surprises the family of her deceased boyfriend by telling them she’s pregnant with his child…

I want to watch this because of the intriguing story. I need to know the nature of the shenanigans that lead to Qualley’s character making the strange claim.

On the other hand, there’s also a part of me that kind of doesn’t want to watch this movie because of all the seemingly unnecessary pain the innocent parties are going to experience. Overall, I’m probably too big a fan of Kinnear, Robinson; plus I’m too curious about Qualley and Ryan’s performances to stay away.

Mena Massoud, Brian Cox, Amy Ryan, Blythe Danner, Connor Jessup, Tennille Read, Allegra Fulton and Christy Bruce also star.

Strange But True Release Dates: September 6th, 2019 (US)…

The subject of depression is certainly interesting and Kinnear has always been good at playing troubled characters. It now looks as though his directorial debut will also be notable. Bring on the dark humour! I’m ready.

Brian Banks is the true story of a football player with dreams to play in the NFL. Dreams that are unjustly halted when he’s wrongly convicted and imprisoned.

Directed by  Tom Shadyac; key cast includes Aldis Hodge, Greg Kinnear, Sherri Shpeherd, Melanie Liburd…

I’m looking forward to seeing Hodge in this role. Also, I only just noticed that I haven’t seen a Kinnear film in a while. The fact that I know the ending will be happy in this particular story of injustice only makes me want to see it more.

Matt Battaglia, Dorian Missick, Xosha Roquemore, Dean Denton and Mystie Smith also star.
