THE WHITE LOTUS – SEASON 3 (2025): The Things I Liked…

I’m up to date with all three seasons of The White Lotus, the HBO series about the lives and shenanigans of the guests and staff of a high-end hotel.

Seasons one and two were great, and my favourite of the three. In this new third instalment, the performances are fantastic, as expected. However, I lost patience at certain points due to a slower pace – and because I didn’t find some of the character stories as engaging as I’d have liked.

Further still, in the first and second seasons, I found the social commentary about the dynamics between the rich and the far-from-rich more poignant and interesting. That’s not to say this season isn’t worth your time if you’re curious. The acting is truly great, after all.

At the time of this post, the season three finale is still a few days out. Nevertheless, I doubt the result will change how I feel about this instalment compared to the first two. I’m happy to be wrong, of course. In fact, I’d prefer it.

Bring on Sunday’s finale, and Season Four!

Have you seen The White Lotus? What first comes to mind when you think of each season? My spoiler-free thoughts for each are as follows:

Season One: The delightful pace and chaos of Episode Four

Season Two: Jennifer Coolidge’s super memorable character and why, deservedly, plenty more people know the name Leo Woodall.

Season Three: Jason Isaacs’s, Sam Nivola and Patrick Schwarzenegger’s performances. Can I say, chef’s kiss? I just did.

Read my spoiler-free movie review of The White Lotus – Season 3 (2025).

HBO’s Emmy award-winning series about the shenanigans of the guests/employees of a luxury resort is back for a promising third season.

Seasons one and two were set in Hawaii and Italy, respectively. This time, we’re off to beautiful Thailand, and regular cast member Natasha Rothwell is joined by Jason Isaacs, Parker Posey, Walton Goggins, Leslie Bibb and Michelle Monaghan, to name just a few.

I enjoyed the characters, stories and performances in seasons one and two of The White Lotus. May this new instalment be another euphony that gets everyone looking forward to season four.

So far, Parker Posey, Jason Isaacs and Walton Goggins’s characters have me most intrigued. And you?

Are you also a fan of The White Lotus stories

Have you watched seasons one and two of The White Lotis?

The White Lotus Release Dates: February 16th, 2025, HBO

THELMA (2024), The Things I Liked…

New Josh Margolin-written/directed action/comedy Thelma is a film I enjoyed for more reasons than the fact that June Squibb (Thelma) is a perfectly adorable ninety-three-year-old grandmother.

In addition to living her life while super cute, Squibb’s Thelma has decided to reclaim the ten thousand dollars that a pair of scammers duped her into handing over. And so begins a well-mapped and paced adventure with good humour, plus unexpected characters.

The first thing I liked about Thelma, right away, in addition to her special charm, was her cosy abode, which I briefly fantasised about moving into.

The second is the generally healthy family dynamic between Thelma, her daughter (Parker Posey), son-in-law (Clark Gregg) and grandson (Fred Hechinger). I adored the latter relationship the most. In fact, I don’t know the last time I saw an equally heartwarming grandma and adult grandson relationship.

Watch Thelma for a well-executed story about a determined, badass grandmother’s adventure. The very least it will do is put a smile on your face, I’m certain of it.

ELSEWHERE (2019): New Trailer Starring Ray Abruzzo, Ken Jeong, Parker Posey, Marc Bendavid, Beau Bridges…

Elsewhere (2019), Ken Jeong, Ray Abruzzo
Elsewhere (2019), Ken Jeong, Ray Abruzzo

In new drama/comedy Elsewhere, Bruno (Ray Abruzzo) is hopelessly attached to the seaside cottage he and his late wife built together. After his in-laws evict him, Bruno vows to get it back at any price.

Written/directed by Hernan Jimenez; additional key cast features Ken Jeong, Marc Bendavid, Parker Posey and Beau Bridges.

This seems like a good ‘new beginnings’ type of film. I’m looking forward to seeing Jeong in a seemingly non-comedy role.

I’m likely over-thinking it, but what if his in-laws allowed the new tenant to move in, while knowing full well that their former son-in-law would very likely fall in love with her?

Candus Churchill, C. Ernst Harth, Susan Hogan, Scott Hylands, Holly James, Kathleen Munroe, Kathleen Munroe, Parker Posey, Paula Shaw, Andy Thompson, Jackie Tohn and Mel Tuck also star.

Elsewhere Release Dates: January 24th, 2020 (UK)…

MASCOTS (2016): Funny…

Mascots (2016), Zach Woods, Sarah Baker
Mascots (2016), Zach Woods, Sarah Baker

As the trailer promised, Mascots has a healthy serving of quirky and entertaining characters. A very special selection of unusual people gathered in one place for the 8th World Mascot Association Championships; a sports mascot competition in which the very best sports mascots compete for the ‘Golden Fluffy Award’.

I’m one of those people who stopped watching television talent programmes because I could no longer take all the seemingly forced and inauthentic sob stories. I also decided that life’s not long enough for me to be ok with sitting through the numerous delusional performer’s unbearably cringeworthy interactions with the judges. Luckily for me, there’s none of that nonsense in Mascots.

I loved the humour and the stories of people unapologetically being their – often very peculiar selves. Sid The Hedgehog (Tom Bennett) and Alvin The Armadillo (Parker Posey) are my two favourites.

Mascots is perfect for a relaxed evening’s viewing. I spent most of the time smiling rather than laughing but in this instance, that’s not a bad thing. I like the shooting style which towards the end really had me feeling as though I were right there in the venue audience.

I’m not quite sure if Mascots is based on a real sports mascot competition of this kind but if someone had tickets, I wouldn’t be so quick to say no.

Written/ directed by Christopher Guest and also starring Chris O’Dowd,  Zach Woods, Sarah Baker and Jane Lynch, watch it because the characters are ‘unhinged’, in a good way.
