THE DIPLOMAT (2023): The Things I Liked…

Spending the last few days watching Netflix’s new eight-episode political drama/thriller, The Diplomathas enlightened me to a few thingsFirstly, as late as I am, I’m officially a new Keri Russell fan. She’s excellent as Kate Wyler, a career diplomat with plenty to juggle while in a high-profile role as ambassador to the United Kingdom. A job for which she’s admittedly ill-suited.

As someone who’d never given much thought to the question ‘What is it that diplomats do?’, watching creator Debora Cahn’s dramatisation of how high-stakes things can sometimes get for those in the role was a very entertaining eye-opener and welcomed education.

In addition to the faultless performances, I appreciate the musical score, the clever story edit and the pacing that builds until a brilliant crescendo. The kind I found satisfying in its execution, yet challenging to come to terms with. The latter, only because I’ll have to wait at least a year before learning how things faired for the characters in question.

I would love for season two to pick up exactly where season one ended, amid all the chaotic activity. If you’ve already watched season one, I bet you can picture how great that would be.

Watch The Diplomat if you’re curious. And certainly for all the great reasons above, plus one more – the sense of humour.

Key additional cast includes, Rufus Sewell, David Gyasi, Ali Ahn, Ato Essandoh, Rory Kinnear, Jess Chanliau, Pearl Mackie, Celia Imrie, Georgie Henley, Nana Mensah, Miguel Sandoval and Michael McKean.

M. Night Shyamalan has a new thriller called Old, and it stars Rufus Sewell, Gael García Bernal, Alex Wolff and Thomasin McKenzie.

Getting older is scary enough. But for the process to be rushed by what looks like a decade within a day, that sounds super scary. I really hope this turns out great.

Embeth Davidtz, Eliza Scanlen, Abbey Lee, Alex Wolff, Ken Leung, Vicky Krieps, Nikki Amuka-Bird, Emun Elliott, Kathleen Chalfant, Matthew Shear, Alexa Swinton and Aaron Pierre also star.

Old Release Dates: July 23rd, 2021 (US)…

Judy (2019), Renée Zellweger, RoadsideFlix

Starring Renée Zellweger, Rufus Sewell,  Bella Ramsey, Jessie Buckley and directed by Rupert Goold; Judy is a new biography / musical about legendary performer Judy Garland, a.k.a Frances Ethel Gumm.

Judy focuses on Garland’s winter of 1968 series of sold-out concerts in London. Goold’s film will show Garland as she prepares for the show, battles with management, charms musicians and reminisces with friends, fans and meets Mickey Deans, her soon-to-be fifth husband….

As someone who’s aware of Garland but not so much her work, especially outside of The Wizard Of Oz (1939), I look forward to being enlightened.

Furthermore, having not watched Zellweger in a movie in a while, I’m looking forward to seeing her do a great job with this role. I wonder if she’ll actually sing…

Michael Gambon, Finn Wittrock, Andy Nyman, Fenella Woolgar, Philippe Spall ,John Dagleish and Gemma-Leah Devereux also star.

Judy Release Dates: September 27th, 2019 (US); October 4th, 2019 (UK)…

THE HOLIDAY (2006): Good At Christmas & Any Other Time The Mood Strikes…

The Holiday (2006), Kate Winslet
The Holiday (2006), Kate Winslet

Set in England and Los Angeles during the festive season, The Holiday stars Kate Winslet, Jude Law, Jack Black and Cameron Diaz.

Written and directed by Nancy Meyers, the stories of the four main and very relatable characters is beautifully told and features just the perfect musical score by the one and only Hans Zimmer.

My favourite scene which I’m sure is also the favourite of many others is the one in the fort that features two talented child actresses. The Holiday is a film to watch when you’re in the mood for a good romance/comedy, whether it’s Christmas or not. There’s also a a certain Bridget Jone’s Diary (2001) vibe to enjoyed.

Watch it because it’s good and funny.
