NIGHT SCHOOL (2018): The Thing I liked…

Night School (2018), Kevin Hart, Tiffany Haddish

Night School, Kevin Hart and Tiffany Haddish’s comedy about adult troublemakers forced to get ready for the GED exam during night classes is not all that I’d hoped.

My favourite moment in the movie is the beginning. Because that’s when it had the most promise. Unfortunately, from that point on, my interest in the characters steadily decreased.

I think Night School should have been at least 20 minutes shorter. I like what it had to say about second chances and how instrumental the right teacher can be in getting the best out of seemingly difficult students. Nevertheless, I wanted the film to have my whole attention, without my mind wandering as it played. It’s therefore not as funny or engaging as the trailer had me hoping.

Give it a chance if you’re a big enough fan of Haddish, Hart and Taran Killam. Just know that you probably won’t consider it one of their best.

NOBODY’S FOOL (2018): New Trailer From Tyler Perry Starring Tiffany Haddish, Tika Sumpter, Whoopi Goldberg, Omari Hardwick…

Nobody’s Fool is a new comedy/drama directed by Tyler Perry and starring Tiffany Haddish, Tika Sumpter, Whoopi Goldberg and Omari Hardwick.

Haddish plays a woman released from prison who helps her sister find  the identity of her catfish (fake identity on a dating/social networking service).

The plot certainly appears to be a little thin. However, the key reason I want to see this is Whoopi Goldberg’s performance.

I’m sure Haddish will be entertaining. Though, how much fun I have will likely depend quite a bit on how much of a ‘clone of her Girls Trip (2017) character’ this new role will be.

Nobody’s Fool Release Dates: November 2nd, 2018 (US); Novemeber 23RD, 2018 (UK)…

In new comedy Night School, Kevin Hart plays a member of a group of grown-up troublemakers who are forced to attend night school in hopes that they’ll pass the GED exam to finally finish high school.

Tiffany Haddish, Taran Killam and Mary Lynn Rajskub also star.

I’m giving this one a chance in hopes that I’ll be plenty amused. Director of The Best Man (1999) and The Best Man Holiday (2013),  Michael D. Lee is in charge. So the hope is indeed alive.

Additional cast includes Keith David, Ben Schwartz, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Bresha Webb and Jacob Batalon.

Night School Release Dates: September 28th, 2018 (US & UK)…

GIRLS TRIP (2017): The Thing I Like

Girls Trip (2017), Regina King, Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish
Girls Trip (2017), Regina King, Jada Pinkett Smith, Queen Latifah, Tiffany Haddish

Girls Trip is a Michael D. Lee (The Best Man Holiday (2013)-directed comedy about lifelong friends getting together in New Orleans for a fun-filled few days after several years apart.

The film’s main stars, Regina Hall, Queen Latifah, Jada Pinkett Smith and Tiffany Haddish all get to shine in their respective roles. However, as everyone has been saying, it is indeed Haddish who absolutely steals the show with her loyal and rather ‘out there’ character – thanks no doubt to her impressive comic timing/delivery.

Girls Trip features a healthy amount of outrageous fun to keep you engaged. As hilarious as it all is, what I loved most about this movie is the way the story of love and general sisterhood between the four friends is handled. A sisterhood enriched with a certain level of realism that I wasn’t expecting, particularly where the relationship between Latifah and Hall’s characters is concerned.

I liked that New Orleans was the setting for this story, if only because it reminded me that I need to make it to that place one day. The setting and the music also had me thinking of Chef (2014), a movie I love and recommend, not just because part of it is also set in New Orleans.

Watch Girls Trip because there’s truth in all the positive feedback.
