BEETLEJUICE (1988): The Things I Liked…

The promising humour and fun special effects in the Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) trailer are why I finally watched Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice (1988).

Seeing what Burton did with the special effects, set/costume design and cinematography, I can now say that I mostly get it.

I enjoyed Alec Baldwin and Geena Davis’s dynamic, particularly before the bridge incident. I could have just watched them go about their day for quite a while, such was their chemistry/charisma together.

Beetlejuice is a clever film of its time, perfectly charming and fun for many. Ultimately, Beetlejuice is not for me, especially as someone rarely charmed by Halloween and all it offers.

That’s not to say that I won’t try to watch Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024. But, perhaps I need to re-think how I choose the thirty-plus-year-old movies I’ve been selecting to watch recently.

There is one other thing that stayed with me from the beginning. Essentially, I found it unsettling just how quickly and easily Barbara (Geena) and Adam (Baldwin) accepted their ‘big life change.’ Of course, this likely says more about me than it does about the movie and I’m fine with that.

At this point, most people have seen Beetlejuice, and, for all the fans who love it, I’m excited for you about September 6th, 2024.

BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE (2024): New Trailer Starring Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Justin Theroux, Winona Ryder, Willem Dafoe…

Starring Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Jenna Ortega, Justin Theroux and Willem Dafoe, the latest trailer for Tim Burton’s Beetlejuice Beetlejuice looks quite fun.

I wonder, what occurred to you as this trailer played?

For me, the order of thoughts that went through my head include… Astrid feels strongly like a Wednesday Addams adjacent character. The guy who says ‘Is your mom Lydia Deetz?’ actually looks like Miss Deetz. The special effects, the makeup, the look ‘n’ feel and the humour are why I’ll have to watch this one.

Lastly, isn’t the above image of Monica Bellucci just super?

Catherine O’Hara, Burn Gorman, Gianni Calchetti, James Fisher, Tim Kavanagh, Juliana Yazbeck, Filipe Cates, Travis Campbell, Leah Perkins and Christopher C. James also star.

BEETLEJUICE BEETLEJUICE (2024): New Trailer From Tim Burton, Starring Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Winona Ryder, Catherine O’Hara, Willem Dafoe…

Directed by Tim Burton; starring Jenna Ortega, Michael Keaton, Willem Dafoe, Winona Ryder, and Catherine O’Hara Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is a follow-up to 1988’s comedy/fantasy hit film, Beetlejuice.

The original film was about a rollicking ghost hired to help haunt a house.

Beetlejuice (1988) is one of those movie titles I’m aware of. But, before this post, if I’d been asked to explain what the film is about, all I’d have for you is: ‘Michael Keaton, a black and white striped outfit, crazy green hair and Tim Burton.’ I may even have uttered the words: ‘Sort of like Edward Scissorhands(?)’ which I’m quite certain would be very incorrect.

I know little about the original movie because I’ve probably never seen it. However, I’m interested because the original was clearly well received, plus, Ortega’s involvement is a highlight, as is the peculiarity of ‘the Juice‘ himself.

What’s your history with Beetlejuice? How familiar are you with the original movie and are you curious about this continuation?

Justin Theroux, Burn Gorman, Gianni Calchetti, James Fisher, Juliana Yazbeck, Filipe Cates, Travis Campbell, Leah Perkins, Christopher C. James and Tim Kavanagh also star.

EDWARD SCISSORHANDS HAS A SON And His Name Is Edgar…

All-Electric Cadillac LYRIQ (2021), Timothée Chalamet, Cadillac
All-Electric Cadillac LYRIQ (2021), Timothée Chalamet, Cadillac

Before you get excited, an Edward Scissorhands remake/sequel has not been confirmed. However, this brand new Super Bowl ad will likely have you thinking: ‘You know, I wouldn’t be opposed to the idea, especially if Timothée Chalamet is the star‘ And who could blame you?

I love this ad and I certainly wouldn’t object to a Scissorhands movie starring Chalamet. He can be Edward, Edgar or any other Scissorhands character, and I’ll watch. Perhaps the studio is teasing us with this ad, just before announcing that a remake/sequel is in the works. Fingers, toes and everything crossed!

I feel as though I already know the answer but would you watch a new Scissorhands movie?

DESTINATION WEDDING (2018): The Things I Liked…

Destination Wedding (2018), Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves
Destination Wedding (2018), Winona Ryder, Keanu Reeves

Destination Wedding, Keanu Reeves and Winona Ryder’s comedy/drama about two unpleasant wedding guests who develop a mutual affection, despite themselves, is just as delightful as the trailer suggested.

The beautiful destination, the way the dialogue posed some of life’s key questions and how it was all so engaging throughout. These are the things I liked most about director Victor Levin’s movie. My favourite moment, if I had to pick one, is the scene when Ryder’s character gets carried.

In my mind, Destination Wedding can probably be likened to a dark and funny cousin of Richard Linklater’s Before Sunrise (1995).

In conclusion, watch it because it’s misery, but fun. Fun that stars many ‘props’ and two engaging characters.
